字源 zìyuán Etymology & Structure
字源洞见 zìyuán dòngjiàn · Etymological Insight

is a pictograph of an animal horn — the oracle-bone form shows a curved pointed protrusion with a ridged shaft. The semantic journey from horn to corner is immediate and universal: both are the sharp, protruding extremity where two planes meet. As Chinese architecture developed the idea of a tucked-away corner 角落, the horn-edge became a spatial concept — a place where walls converge, where the world's edges fold.

角 is its own radical (Kangxi #148) and spawns a small but sharp semantic family: 触 chù (to touch — a horn making contact), 解 jiě (to untie — a hand pulling apart horn from bone), 斛 hú (a grain measure shaped like a horn-bowl). The etymology of 解 is particularly vivid: a hand prying an ox horn from the skull — the original image of separating, unbinding, understanding.

This is also the first character in this site's own name: 角落書屋 — the corner book-room. A nook where learning gathers.

音乐 · 五声 yīnyuè · wǔshēng Music: The Pentatonic Scale
五声音阶 wǔshēng yīnjiē · The Five Tones

Classical Chinese music is built on a pentatonic scale with five named tones: 宫 gōng · 商 shāng · 角 jué · 徵 zhǐ · 羽 yǔ. These correspond roughly to do-re-mi-sol-la. 角 jué, the third tone, is associated in traditional cosmology with spring, the east, wood (), and the liver. The five tones were also mapped onto the five relationships, five seasons (including the transition period), and five planets.

The same 角 jué reading appears in the theatrical tradition: 角色 juésè (role/character) likely derives from the use of costumed performers in ritual music-drama. A 角 was originally a type of theatrical performer in Tang and Song court entertainments.
