一边…一边

yībiān…yībiān

The frame for doing two things at once. 一边 V₁ 一边 V₂ = while doing V₁, also doing V₂. One subject, two simultaneous ongoing actions — the Mandarin construction for multitasking.

Pattern 句型
Both verbs happen simultaneously, by the same subject. Neither action is the "main" one — they are co-occurring. 一边 derives from 边 biān (side; edge; border): literally "on one side…on another side" — two actions running in parallel lanes. Both V₁ and V₂ are typically ongoing or habitual actions, not instantaneous ones.
她一边唱歌一边跳舞。
Tā yībiān chànggē yībiān tiàowǔ.
She sings while dancing.
他们一边喝茶一边聊天。
Tāmen yībiān hē chá yībiān liáotiān.

语法要点 yǔfǎ yàodiǎn · Grammar Points

Same subject required. Both actions must share the same subject. 一边…一边 cannot connect two different people doing different things — that is a different construction entirely (用…的时候, …的同时, or simply two separate clauses). This is the single most important constraint.

Action verbs, not stative. 一边…一边 works with action verbs (, , 唱, 工作, 看). It does not combine well with stative verbs (, , 知道, 喜欢) — you can't "be happy while knowing something" as a simultaneous-action frame. If both states simply coexist, use 而且 or 既…又 instead.

Subject position. The subject appears once, before the first 一边. Do not repeat the subject after the second 一边.
