字源 zìyuán Etymology & Structure: Cutting Apart the Ox
字源洞见 zìyuán dòngjiàn · Etymological Insight

解 is an associative compound, and its picture is unusually vivid. The graph gathers three elements: jiǎo (the horn of an ox), 刀 dāo (a knife), and niú (an ox). The scene is a butchering: a hand takes a knife to an ox and pries the horn away from the head, separating the parts of the carcass cleanly along their natural joins. The radical , the horn, is the part the eye fixes on, the thing being detached. From that one act of cutting cleanly apart the whole tree of meaning grows.

The Shuōwén Jiězì 说文解字 glosses 解 as 判也, to divide, to cut apart, and notes the ox horn and the knife in the graph. Hold that literal sense first: to take a bound, joined, knotted, or whole thing and separate it into its parts. Every later meaning is a metaphor on that one motion. Untie a rope: separate what was tied. Solve a problem: separate the tangle into pieces that come free. Explain a text: take a dense passage apart so its sense lies open. Dissolve a substance: break it apart into a solution. In each case 解 undoes a bind.

解 is a polyphone with three readings. The primary reading jiě covers the great family above: to untie, to solve, to explain, to dissolve, to relieve. A second reading jiè means to escort or send a prisoner under guard (押解 yājiè, 解送 jièsòng), the sense of conveying something away. A third reading xiè survives mainly as a surname and in 解数 xièshù (a set of skills or moves, as of a martial artist). When you meet 解, default to jiě; reach for jiè only in the narrow legal-escort sense and xiè only for the name or the skill word.

辨析 biànxī To Understand vs To Be Acquainted With: 理解 vs 了解
辨析 biànxī · Two kinds of knowing 理解 lǐjiě ( = principle, reason): to understand in the sense of grasping the logic, the reasoning, the why of something. You 理解 an idea, an argument, a person's feelings. It is comprehension from the inside, getting the sense to come clear.
了解 liǎojiě ( = to finish, to know fully): to be acquainted with, to know the facts about, to have information on. You 了解 a situation, a city, a candidate's background. It is knowledge from gathered facts, knowing the lay of a thing.
A clean test: 理解 is grasping meaning; 了解 is possessing information. You can 了解 every fact about a person yet still not 理解 why they acted as they did.
速记 sùjì · Quick test Did the sense come clear in your mind? → 理解 lǐjiě. (我理解你的意思 = I understand what you mean; 互相理解 = mutual understanding.)
Do you know the facts and background? → 了解 liǎojiě. (我很了解他 = I know him well; 了解情况 = look into the situation.)
解开 jiěkāi To Untie, Liberate & Remove
解开 jiěkāi to untie; to undo; to unfasten
V 动词 dòngcí
解 jiě + kāi (to open). The most literal 解-word: to untie a knot, undo a button, unfasten a rope. By extension it covers loosening any bind, even a metaphorical one: 解开心结 = untie the knot in one's heart, resolve an inner tension. The picture of separating the bound thing is right on the surface.
他解开了鞋带。
Tā jiěkāi le xiédài.
He untied his shoelaces.
解放 jiěfàng to liberate; to free; liberation
V/N 动名词 dòngmíngcí
解 jiě + 放 fàng (to release; to set free). To untie and let go. The standard word for liberating people from bondage, oppression, or restraint: 解放思想 = free up one's thinking; 解放双手 = free one's hands (from drudgery). It is also a loaded historical term in modern China, where 解放 names the 1949 establishment of the People's Republic.
新技术把工人从重复劳动中解放出来。
Xīn jìshù bǎ gōngrén cóng chóngfù láodòng zhōng jiěfàng chūlái.
New technology frees workers from repetitive labor.
解除 jiěchú to remove; to lift; to terminate (a state or obligation)
V 动词 dòngcí
解 jiě + 除 chú (to remove; to do away with). To untie and clear away. Used for lifting a binding state or formal tie: 解除警报 = lift an alert; 解除合同 = terminate a contract; 解除武装 = disarm; 解除疲劳 = relieve fatigue. More formal than 解开, it dissolves an arrangement or condition rather than a physical knot.
双方同意解除合同。
Shuāngfāng tóngyì jiěchú hétong.
Both sides agreed to terminate the contract.
解雇 jiěgù to dismiss; to fire (an employee)
V 动词 dòngcí
解 jiě + 雇 gù (to hire; to employ). To undo the hiring. The formal word for dismissing someone from a job, the legal counterpart to the colloquial 炒鱿鱼 chǎo yóuyú (lit. stir-fry the squid). 解雇 separates the worker from the employment tie, the same "undoing a bind" logic applied to a contract of work.
公司因为他多次迟到而解雇了他。
Gōngsī yīnwèi tā duō cì chídào ér jiěgù le tā.
The company dismissed him for being late repeatedly.
解决 jiějué To Solve & To Explain
语义洞见 yǔyì dòngjiàn · Semantic Insight

Two of the most useful 解-words sit in the realm of thought. To solve a problem (解决 jiějué, 解答 jiědá, 解题 jiětí) is to take a tangle and separate it until the answer comes free, exactly the ox-and-knife motion turned inward. To explain a thing (解释 jiěshì, 讲解 jiǎngjiě) is to take it apart in words so the listener can see its inner structure. The shared image is unwinding: a problem is a knot you loosen, an explanation is a dense thing you open up. The opposite, 误解 wùjiě, is to take a thing apart wrongly and so misread its sense.

解决 jiějué to solve; to resolve; to settle
V 动词 dòngcí
解 jiě + 决 jué (to decide; to settle). To undo and settle. The all-purpose verb for solving a problem or settling a matter: 解决问题 = solve a problem; 解决困难 = overcome a difficulty; 想办法解决 = find a way to settle it. One of the highest-frequency verbs in the language for getting something dealt with for good.
这个问题必须尽快解决。
Zhège wèntí bìxū jǐnkuài jiějué.
This problem must be solved as soon as possible.
解释 jiěshì to explain; to interpret; an explanation
V/N 动名词 dòngmíngcí
解 jiě + 释 shì (to release; to elucidate). To open a thing up and let its sense out. The everyday word for explaining: 解释原因 = explain the reason; 做出解释 = give an explanation. It also covers defending oneself: 解释误会 = clear up a misunderstanding. Where 解决 settles a problem, 解释 makes a meaning plain.
老师耐心地解释了这个语法。
Lǎoshī nàixīn de jiěshì le zhège yǔfǎ.
The teacher patiently explained this grammar point.
理解 lǐjiě to understand; to comprehend; understanding
V/N 动名词 dòngmíngcí
lǐ (principle; reason) + 解 jiě. To untie a thing down to its reason. To understand the logic or sense of something, and by extension to be understanding toward a person: 理解万岁 = "long live mutual understanding"; 请你理解 = please understand (my position). Contrast 了解 liǎojiě (to be acquainted with the facts): see the 辨析 section above.
我完全理解你的处境。
Wǒ wánquán lǐjiě nǐ de chǔjìng.
I completely understand your situation.
误解 wùjiě to misunderstand; a misunderstanding
V/N 动名词 dòngmíngcí
误 wù (to err; by mistake) + 解 jiě. To take a thing apart wrongly. To read a meaning incorrectly, or the wrong reading itself: 产生误解 = a misunderstanding arises; 消除误解 = clear up a misunderstanding. The 误 marks the comprehension as faulty, the inverse of a clean 理解.
这只是一场误解,别放在心上。
Zhè zhǐshì yì chǎng wùjiě, bié fàng zài xīn shàng.
This is just a misunderstanding, do not take it to heart.
解答 jiědá to answer; to solve and explain; a solution
V/N 动名词 dòngmíngcí
解 jiě + 答 dá (to answer; to reply). To unravel and answer. Used for working out and explaining the answer to a question or problem, especially in study: 解答疑问 = answer a question; 标准解答 = the standard solution. Where 回答 huídá is just "to reply," 解答 implies showing the working that resolves the question.
老师为我们解答了所有的疑问。
Lǎoshī wèi wǒmen jiědá le suǒyǒu de yíwèn.
The teacher answered all of our questions.
溶解 róngjiě To Dissolve & To Relieve
语义洞见 yǔyì dòngjiàn · Semantic Insight

The most physical branch of 解 brings the knife back to matter. To dissolve (溶解 róngjiě) is to break a solid apart until it spreads through a liquid, the ox-and-knife separation taken down to the molecular scale. From there 解 reaches the body's needs: to relieve or satisfy a pressing want, as in 解渴 jiěkě (to quench thirst) and 解饿 jiě'è (to stave off hunger). The logic holds: thirst is a bind on the body, and to 解 it is to undo that pressure. Even 解手 jiěshǒu, the polite phrase for relieving oneself, runs on the same image of release.

溶解 róngjiě to dissolve (in a liquid)
V 动词 dòngcí
溶 róng (to melt into liquid) + 解 jiě. To melt and break apart. The scientific verb for a substance dissolving in a solvent: 盐在水里溶解 = salt dissolves in water; 溶解度 = solubility. Here 解 keeps its most literal force, the breaking of a whole into dispersed parts, in the language of chemistry.
糖很快在热水里溶解了。
Táng hěn kuài zài rèshuǐ lǐ róngjiě le.
The sugar quickly dissolved in the hot water.
解渴 jiěkě to quench thirst
V 动词 dòngcí
解 jiě + 渴 kě (thirst; thirsty). To undo thirst. The everyday verb-object phrase for slaking thirst: 喝水解渴 = drink water to quench thirst; 西瓜很解渴 = watermelon is very thirst-quenching. The same pattern builds 解闷 jiěmèn (relieve boredom) and 解乏 jiěfá (relieve fatigue): 解 undoes a bodily or mental pressure.
天太热了,喝杯凉茶解解渴吧。
Tiān tài rè le, hē bēi liángchá jiějie kě ba.
It is too hot; have a cup of cool tea to quench your thirst.
押解 yājiè to escort (a prisoner) under guard
V 动词 dòngcí
押 yā (to detain; to hold) + 解 jiè. The clearest home of the second reading jiè. To escort a prisoner or valuables under guard from one place to another: 押解犯人 = escort a prisoner; the related 解送 jièsòng = send under escort. Note the reading shift: the 解 here is jiè, not jiě, the sense of conveying rather than undoing.
Reading watch. 解 is jiè only in this narrow escort-under-guard sense. In everyday vocabulary the reading is almost always jiě (untie, solve, explain, dissolve). The third reading, xiè, appears mainly in the surname 解 and in 解数 xièshù, a set of moves or skills.
警察把嫌疑人押解回警局。
Jǐngchá bǎ xiányírén yājiè huí jǐngjú.
The police escorted the suspect back to the station under guard.
成语 chéngyǔ Idioms & Set Phrases
迎刃而解 yíng rèn ér jiě to split apart at the meeting of the blade: solved with ease Lit: meeting 迎 the blade 刃, it splits 解. Like bamboo that splits cleanly the moment the knife touches it: once the hardest part is cracked, everything else falls apart of its own accord. Used when solving one key difficulty makes all the rest resolve effortlessly.
不解之缘 bù jiě zhī yuán a bond that cannot be untied: an indissoluble tie Lit: a connection 缘 that cannot be untied 解. An unbreakable bond or lifelong affinity, often with a person, a place, or a pursuit. 他和音乐结下了不解之缘 = he formed a lifelong bond with music. Here 解 is "to untie," and the negation makes the tie permanent.
难解难分 nán jiě nán fēn hard to untie, hard to part: locked together Lit: hard 难 to untie 解, hard 难 to separate . Two sides so entangled they cannot be pulled apart: a deadlocked contest, a fierce struggle, or two people inseparably close. 双方打得难解难分 = the two sides fought to a standstill.
一知半解 yì zhī bàn jiě to know a little, to half-understand: superficial knowledge Lit: one part known , half 半 understood 解. A shallow, fragmentary grasp of something, knowing a bit but not the whole. 对这门学问他只是一知半解 = he has only a superficial grasp of this subject. Usually mildly critical of half-baked understanding.
记忆法 jìyìfǎ · Master Retention Image

See the graph for what it draws: a knife 刀 prying an ox horn from the ox , separating a whole thing cleanly into its parts. Hold that one motion and every sense of 解 falls out. Untie what is bound (解开, 解放, 解除, 解雇). Loosen the knot in thought, the problem that comes free and the meaning made plain (解决, 解释, 理解, 误解, 解答). Break a thing apart in matter, and relieve a pressure on the body (溶解, 解渴). Each is the same blade undoing the same kind of bind.

Two things to lock in. First the reading: 解 is jiě almost everywhere, jiè only in the narrow escort-under-guard sense (押解), and xiè only as the surname or the skill word 解数. Second the pair: 理解 lǐjiě is grasping the reason, while 了解 liǎojiě is knowing the facts. You can 了解 every detail about someone and still fail to 理解 why they did it.
