方 fāng is an ancient pictograph whose exact original referent is debated. The oracle-bone form shows a shape often read as a plough with a crossbar, or alternatively as two boats lashed side by side; the Shuōwén Jiězì glosses it as boats joined together. What matters for the modern character is the idea that settled onto the glyph: a flat, four-sided, oriented thing. 方 became the word for "square," and from squareness came the whole family of meaning.

Four senses branch from that core:

1. Square, the shape. 正方形 zhèngfāngxíng (square), 长方形 chángfāngxíng (rectangle), 方块 fāngkuài (a block, a cube).
2. Direction and place. A square has four sides, so 方 names orientation: 方向 fāngxiàng (direction), 东方 dōngfāng (the east), 地方 dìfang (place).
3. Method and way. The path by which something is approached: 方法 fāngfǎ (method), 方式 fāngshì (way, manner), and the prescription a doctor writes, 方子 fāngzi.
4. Side or party. One of two parties to a matter: 对方 duìfāng (the other party), 双方 shuāngfāng (both sides).

The thread is orientation. A square has fixed sides and corners, and from that fixity 方 supplies the language of where a thing is, which way it faces, and how it is to be done. As an adverb it also means "just now," the moment squarely at hand.

记忆法 jìyìfǎ · Master Retention Image

Hold a square in mind. It has four equal sides and four fixed corners, and everything 方 means radiates from that fixity. The four sides become the four directions (东方, 西方, 南方, 北方). A fixed spot on the ground becomes a place (地方). The settled procedure for a task becomes a method (方法). And one of the two facing sides of a matter becomes a party to it (对方).

When 方 appears as an adverb meaning "just now," picture the present moment as the corner squarely under your foot: the point you are standing on right now. From the geometry of the square, the whole vocabulary of orientation and approach falls out.
