The left side of 阴 is 阝, the compressed form of 阜 (fù, a mound or hill of earth). When 阝 sits on the left of a character it almost always means a slope, a wall, a terrace, or a place defined by raised ground: 阴 (shady slope), 阳 (sunny slope), 陡 (steep), 险 (precipitous), 院 (courtyard). The mound is the stage on which 阴 was first observed.
The original meaning of 阴 was concrete and geographical: the north-facing, shaded side of a hill, the slope the sun does not reach. Stand on a ridge in the northern hemisphere and the southern face is bright while the northern face stays cool and dim. That dark slope is 阴; the bright slope across the valley is 阳. This is why so many Chinese place names encode 阴 and 阳: 洛阳 (Luòyáng) sits on the sunny north bank of the Luo River, 江阴 (Jiāngyīn) on the shaded south bank of the Yangtze. The names are little maps of sun and shadow.
The traditional form 陰 has 侌 on the right, showing 今 over 云 (cloud), a cloud closing over the sky and cutting off the sun. The simplified 阴 swaps this for 月 (yuè, moon), a neat choice: the moon is the yin luminary, the cool night light that balances the sun. So the simplified character literally reads "the moon side of the hill," while the traditional one reads "the clouded side of the hill." Both point at the same thing, the place the sun has left.

阴 yīn (shaded; clouded) + 天 tiān (sky; day; weather). A day when clouds cover the sun, the most concrete everyday use of 阴. This is the original geographic shade made meteorological: the whole sky becomes the shaded slope. Weather forecasts grade the sky 晴 (clear) to 多云 (partly cloudy) to 阴 (overcast). Because the philosophical 阴 carries a tinge of gloom, 阴天 doubles easily as a description of a low, heavy mood.
今天阴天，出门记得带伞。

阴 yīn (shade) + 影 yǐng (shadow; image). A literal shadow, the dark shape cast where light is blocked, and also a medical shadow on an X-ray (肺部阴影, a shadow on the lung). Its most common figurative use is psychological: a 心理阴影 is a lasting emotional scar, a trauma that shadows a person long after the event. 给他留下了阴影 means "it left a shadow on him."

阴凉yīnliángshady and cool; a shaded cool spot

阴 yīn (shade) + 凉 liáng (cool). Shaded and pleasantly cool, the welcome shade of a tree on a hot day. Here the shadow is entirely positive, the relief the shaded slope offers in summer. 阴凉处 (a shady, cool place) is the standard storage instruction on medicine and food packaging: keep in a cool, shaded spot. This card is a useful reminder that 阴 is not always sinister, sometimes it is simply the cool side, and welcome.
It was too hot at noon, so we rested in the cool shade under the trees.

From the shaded slope, 阴 fans out into three further fields, each a logical step from the last. Because the moon is the cool night luminary, the yin counterpart of the sun, the moon-based calendar is the 阴历. Because shadow hides what light would reveal, anything covert or scheming is 阴: a 阴谋 is a plot hatched in the dark. And because the days pass as a rhythm of light and shade, time itself is 光阴, "light and shadow," the most poetic word for the passing of one's days.
These are not three unrelated meanings to memorize separately. They are one image followed to its conclusions. The dark slope is cool, so 阴 is the moon and the night. The dark slope is unseen, so 阴 is the hidden and the covert. The dark slope is half of every day, so 阴 alternating with 阳 is the very pulse of time. A learner who fixes the picture of the shaded hillside can derive the rest.
阴历yīnlìthe lunar calendar; the traditional Chinese calendar

阴 yīn (moon; lunar) + 历 lì (calendar). The traditional calendar reckoned by the phases of the moon, as opposed to the 阳历 (yánglì, the sun-based Gregorian calendar). Strictly the Chinese traditional calendar is 阴阳合历 (a combined lunisolar calendar), but in everyday speech 阴历 is what people call it. The Spring Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and most traditional holidays fall on 阴历 dates, which is why they shift against the Gregorian calendar each year. Often called 农历 (nónglì, the farming calendar).
The Spring Festival is reckoned by the lunar calendar.

阴谋yīnmóua plot; a conspiracy; a scheme hatched in the dark

阴 yīn (hidden; covert) + 谋 móu (to plot; to scheme). A plan that operates in shadow, unseen, the dark face 阴 takes when it manifests as human deception. The contrast is with open, legitimate action, which would be 阳 (overt). 阴谋诡计 (yīnmóu guǐjì, plots and tricks) is the fuller expression, and 阴谋论 (yīnmóu lùn) is a conspiracy theory. A scheme carried out in the open, by contrast, is a 阳谋, a plot you can see coming and still cannot stop.

光阴guāngyīntime; the passing days (literally "light and shadow")

光 guāng (light) + 阴 yīn (shadow). The most poetic word for time in Chinese, naming the days by the very thing that measures them: the alternation of sunlight and shade, day and night, sweeping across the ground like the shadow on a sundial. 光阴 always carries a faint melancholy, the sense of time slipping past and not returning. 一寸光阴一寸金 (one inch of time is worth one inch of gold) is the proverb every schoolchild learns.
光阴似箭，转眼又是一年。
Guāngyīn sì jiàn, zhuǎnyǎn yòu shì yì nián.
Time flies like an arrow; in the blink of an eye another year has passed.
Paired with 阳, the character becomes one pole of the deepest framework in Chinese thought. 阴 is the receptive, cool, dark, contracting, still, feminine principle; 阳 is the active, warm, bright, expanding, moving, masculine one. Neither is good or bad, and neither can exist without the other. The whole cosmology grows from the same image that gives the character its etymology: the two slopes of a single hill, one in shadow, one in sun.

光阴似箭guāng yīn sì jiàntime flies like an arrow — the days pass with frightening speed光阴 guāngyīn (time, light-and-shadow) + 似 sì (resembles) + 箭 jiàn (arrow). Time shoots past like a loosed arrow, gone before you can grasp it. Usually paired with its twin 日月如梭 (the sun and moon shuttle by like a weaver's shuttle). 光阴似箭，日月如梭，一晃十年就过去了。(Time flies like an arrow, sun and moon dart like a shuttle; in a flash, ten years have gone by.) The standard sigh over how fast life moves.
阴差阳错yīn chā yáng cuòyin off, yang astray — a chain of coincidences producing an unexpected result阴 yīn + 差 chā (off; awry) + 阳 yáng + 错 cuò (wrong). A tangle of small errors and coincidences, some hidden (阴), some accidental (阳), that combine to produce an outcome nobody intended, often a missed chance or a strange twist of fate. 因为阴差阳错，他们错过了那班火车。(Through a chain of mishaps, they missed that train.) Also written 阴错阳差.
阳奉阴违yáng fèng yīn wéiobey openly, defy in secret — to comply in appearance while resisting in private阳 yáng (openly) + 奉 fèng (to obey; to comply) + 阴 yīn (covertly) + 违 wéi (to disobey). To nod and agree to someone's face while quietly doing the opposite behind their back. The phrase turns on the 阴 / 阳 contrast of overt and covert: the visible compliance is 阳, the hidden defiance is 阴. A sharp criticism of two-faced subordinates. 他对上级阳奉阴违，从不真心执行。(He obeys his superiors to their faces but defies them in secret, never truly carrying out orders.)
绿树成阴lǜ shù chéng yīngreen trees forming shade — lush, leafy, and cool绿树 lǜshù (green trees) + 成 chéng (to form) + 阴 yīn (shade). Trees grown so full that their crowns join into continuous shade, a picture of a flourishing, well-grown garden or avenue in high summer. Here 阴 is the welcome, cooling shadow, the same positive sense as 阴凉. 几十年过去，当年的小树苗如今已绿树成阴。(Decades on, the saplings of those years have grown into a canopy of cool green shade.)

The whole character lives in one picture: a hill (阝, the mound radical) with the moon (月) rising over its far slope. That is the shaded side, the face the sun has left. Hold the dark slope and every meaning of 阴 unfolds from it without memorization.
The slope is cool, so 阴 is the moon and the lunar calendar (阴历) and the welcome shade of a summer tree (阴凉). The slope is dim, so 阴 is the overcast sky (阴天) and the shadow on the ground or on the heart (阴影). The slope is unseen, so 阴 is the plot hatched out of sight (阴谋) and the subordinate who defies you in secret (阳奉阴违). And because the slope is half of every hill and every day, 阴 paired with 阳 becomes the rhythm of time itself: 光阴, the sweep of light and shadow across the ground.
Remember too that the shaded side is not the wrong side. 阴凉 is relief; 绿树成阴 is a flourishing garden; the lunar calendar carries the year's dearest festivals. 阴 is half of the whole, the cool, still, hidden half, and the cosmology that grew from this hillside insists that the whole cannot do without it.
