The term 太极 tàijí precedes the martial art by more than a thousand years. It appears in the Yijing 易经 (Book of Changes) as a cosmological concept: 太极 is the Supreme Ultimate, the undifferentiated state of being before the primal split into 阴 yīn and 阳 yáng. The passage in the Xici 系辞 (Appended Statements) runs: 易有太极,是生两仪,两仪生四象,四象生八卦 — "In the Changes there is the Supreme Ultimate, which gives birth to the Two Modes; the Two Modes give birth to the Four Images; the Four Images give birth to the Eight Trigrams." 太极 is the still point before the first distinction.

The famous Tàijí diagram — the yin-yang symbol 太极图 tàijí tú, the black-and-white circle with its interlocking teardrop shapes — is associated with Song dynasty cosmologist 周敦颐 Zhōu Dūnyí (1017–1073 CE), who composed the influential "Explanation of the Tàijí Diagram" (太极图说 Tàijí Tú Shuō). The diagram encodes a dynamic model: yin contains the seed of yang (the white dot within the black); yang contains the seed of yin (the black dot within the white). Nothing is purely one or the other; everything cycles. This is not decoration — it is a precise metaphysical claim about the structure of change.

The martial art called 太极拳 tàijí quán (Supreme Ultimate Fist) takes this cosmological framework as its operating principle. The practice embodies the philosophy rather than merely gesturing toward it: softness overcomes hardness (柔克刚 róu kè gāng) because water, which is soft, eventually wears away stone, which is hard. Force is redirected rather than resisted, because opposition generates resistance, while yielding redirects energy. The practitioner aims to embody 太极 — not the splitting of yin and yang, but the undivided state before — and from that stillness, respond to whatever arises.

The historical origins of tàijíquán as a martial art are disputed and probably irrecoverable with certainty. The most popular traditional account names 张三丰 Zhāng Sānfēng, a semi-legendary Daoist immortal associated with Wudang Mountain 武当山, as the founder — typically dated to the Song or Ming dynasty. He is said to have observed a fight between a snake and a crane, in which the snake's soft yielding overcame the crane's sharp attacking, and derived the principles of the art from this observation. This story is charming and almost certainly apocryphal; the Zhāng Sānfēng attribution appears nowhere in the earliest tàijíquán texts.

What is documentable is that 太极拳 as a named and systematized practice emerges from 陈家沟 Chén jiā gōu — Chen Village — in Wenxian County 温县, Henan province, in the seventeenth century. The Chen family genealogy credits 陈王廷 Chén Wángtíng (c. 1600–1680 CE), a Ming dynasty military officer who retired to village life after the dynasty's collapse, with synthesizing existing martial techniques with Daoist breathing practices and the theoretical framework of yin-yang and the Eight Trigrams into what became Chen-style tàijíquán 陈式太极拳. The oldest surviving tàijíquán manuscript tradition traces to the Chen family. The village of Chenjiagou, in a small valley of the Yellow River plain, still functions as the living center of the Chen tradition; its residents include some of the world's most accomplished practitioners.

The art remained a closely guarded family secret for six or seven generations. The pivotal figure in its spread beyond the Chen family is 杨露禅 Yáng Lùchán (1799–1872 CE), a peasant from Yongnian County 永年县, Hebei province, who traveled to Chenjiagou and reportedly worked as a servant in the Chen household to get access to the teaching. He eventually became the first outsider to learn the full curriculum. Returning to Beijing, he adapted Chen-style's explosive fa jin 发劲 (issuing force) into a slower, more medically accessible form that became 杨式太极拳 Yang-style — and taught it widely, including to the imperial family. Yang-style is today the most widely practiced style in the world; the simplified 24-movement form derived from it is what most people mean when they say "tàijíquán."

The most common misunderstanding of tàijíquán is that slowness is its distinguishing feature and that slow movement is therefore easy. It is neither the feature nor easy. Slow movement in tàijí practice is a training method: it forces the practitioner to identify where force is held, where the structure collapses, where the breath interrupts. The slowness is diagnostic. A practitioner who has trained the slow form over many years can — in the Chen tradition especially — release the movements at full speed with sudden explosive power. The slowness builds the capacity for speed by eliminating its preconditions: tension, bracing, and muscular effort.

The key technical concept is 松 sōng — usually translated as "relaxed" but more accurately meaning "released" or "unbound." 松 is not the limpness of a rag doll but the specific quality of a structure that is aligned and supported without being held together by muscular tension. The analogy frequently used in classical tàijí texts is a steel bar hanging by a thread: the thread provides minimal support and the bar hangs loose, but the bar itself retains its structural integrity. 松 allows the practitioner to respond instantly to incoming force without the delay caused by releasing tension first.

The second critical concept is 听劲 tīng jìn — "listening to force" or "listening jin." In the context of tàijíquán's partner practice (推手 tuīshǒu, "pushing hands"), 听劲 refers to the tactile sensitivity that allows a practitioner to sense the direction, strength, and intent of a partner's incoming force through contact rather than through sight. A practitioner with developed 听劲 can feel where the partner's force is coming from, where it is going, and where the empty space is — and redirect accordingly. This is the practical expression of the theoretical principle that soft overcomes hard: you do not need to exert force against force if you can feel force coming and redirect it before it arrives.

These principles explain why tàijíquán practice is understood in China as both a martial art and a 养生 yǎngshēng (health cultivation) practice simultaneously — not as two separate applications of the same movements, but as expressions of the same underlying quality. A body that is 松, that moves from its center, that responds to its environment without bracing — that is a healthy body in the full Chinese medical sense, one through which qì moves freely and the organs function without obstruction.
