字源zìyuánEtymology & Structure
字源洞见 zìyuán dòngjiàn · Etymological Insight
古 gǔ rests on the mouth radical 口. The traditional reading of the graph, repeated in the dictionaries, is irresistible for a learner: a 十 (ten) above a 口 (mouth), the old as what ten mouths, ten generations, have passed down by word of mouth. Whatever the strict paleography, this folk-etymology captures the heart of the word exactly: 古 is not merely the distant in time but the inherited, the handed-on, what reaches us through many speakers across many years. The simplified and traditional forms are identical, five strokes unchanged.
From that core of what the generations have transmitted, three senses unfold:
1. Ancient, of old times. The far past as a stretch of time: 古代 gǔdài (ancient times), 古老 gǔlǎo (ancient, age-old), 远古 yuǎngǔ (remote antiquity), 自古 zìgǔ (since ancient times). 2. Classical, antique. The objects, texts, and traces the past left behind: 古典 gǔdiǎn (classical), 古文 gǔwén (classical prose), 古董 gǔdǒng (an antique), 古迹 gǔjì (a historic site), 考古 kǎogǔ (archaeology). 3. Quaint, unconventional. A person or manner that feels out of step with the present, old-fashioned in a slightly odd way: 古怪 gǔguài (eccentric), 古板 gǔbǎn (rigid and old-fashioned).
The thread is age that carries weight. To be 古 is to come down to us from before, whether as an era, an inherited treasure, or a temperament that belongs to an older world.

古代gǔdàiAncient Times
语义洞见 yǔyì dòngjiàn · Semantic Insight
The first and broadest face of 古 is plain antiquity, the distant past as a span of time. 古代 gǔdài names that past as a historical era, the age of dynasties and classics, the default opposite of 现代 the modern. 古老 gǔlǎo is an adjective: not a date but a quality of great age, applied to a city, a craft, or a civilisation that has lasted. 远古 yuǎngǔ pushes further still, to the remote and almost legendary beginnings before recorded history. Together they sweep from the merely old to the unimaginably ancient.

辨析 biànxī · 古代 vs. 古老古代 gǔdài points to a stretch of time, the ancient era as opposed to the modern: it is a noun naming a period. 古老 gǔlǎo is an adjective describing the quality of being very old and long-lasting: an 古老的城市 is an age-old city, but you would not say a city is 古代. One names when, the other describes how old.

Adj 形容词 xíngróngcí
古 gǔ (ancient) + 老 lǎo (old). Describes something of great age that has endured: an 古老的传统 age-old tradition, an 古老的文明 ancient civilisation, an 古老的传说 old legend. It praises longevity and depth of roots rather than fixing a date.
远古yuǎngǔremote antiquity; the distant ancient past
N 名词 míngcí
远 yuǎn (far, remote) + 古 gǔ (ancient). The very distant past, the dim and often legendary beginnings before clear historical record: 远古时代 "remote antiquity," 远古传说 "ancient myths and legends." Reaches further back than 古代, toward the edge of memory.
远古的人类住在山洞里。
Yuǎngǔ de rénlèi zhù zài shāndòng lǐ.
In remote antiquity, humans lived in caves.
构词 gòucí · The depth-of-time scale
A modifier before 古 measures how far back you reach: 远古 yuǎngǔ remote antiquity, 上古 shànggǔ high antiquity (the earliest recorded ages), 中古 zhōnggǔ the medieval middle ages, 近古 jìngǔ the late pre-modern past. The further the prefix, the deeper into time the word looks.
古典gǔdiǎnClassical & Antique
语义洞见 yǔyì dòngjiàn · Semantic Insight
From the past as time, 古 turns to the past as a body of things: the texts, objects, and traces antiquity has left in our hands. 古典 gǔdiǎn is the adjective for the classical, the canonical works and refined style of the old tradition. 古文 gǔwén is classical prose, the literary language of those works. 古董 gǔdǒng is the antique, the prized old object collected for its age. 古迹 gǔjì is the historic site, a ruin or monument that survives on the ground, and 考古 kǎogǔ is the discipline that digs such traces up and reads them. Here 古 is not abstract age but the concrete inheritance the past has handed down.
古典gǔdiǎnclassical (of the canonical tradition)
Adj 形容词 xíngróngcí
古 gǔ (ancient) + 典 diǎn (canon, standard work). Pertaining to the classical heritage and its refined standards: 古典文学 "classical literature," 古典音乐 "classical music," 古典美 "classical beauty." Marks something as belonging to a venerable, canonical tradition rather than the modern or popular.
Dream of the Red Chamber is a representative classical novel.

N 名词 míngcí
古 gǔ (ancient) + 董 dǒng (to collect, to keep). A prized old object valued for its age and craft: 古董家具 "antique furniture," 收藏古董 "to collect antiques." Used figuratively of a person hopelessly behind the times, an "old relic."

辨析 biànxī · 古迹 vs. 古董古迹 gǔjì is a historic site or monument fixed in place, a ruin, an old temple, a stretch of ancient wall that you visit. 古董 gǔdǒng is a movable old object, collected and traded, that you can hold or own. One stays on the land; the other passes from hand to hand.
古怪gǔguàiQuaint & Odd
语义洞见 yǔyì dòngjiàn · Semantic Insight
The third face of 古 turns inward, to character. When something belongs too much to an older world, it can seem out of step with the present, strange or stubbornly old-fashioned. 古怪 gǔguài pairs 古 with 怪 (strange) to mean eccentric or odd, a person or temper that does not fit ordinary expectation. 古板 gǔbǎn pairs 古 with 板 (stiff, a board) to mean rigid and inflexible, old-fashioned in a humourless way. In both, the antiquity that elsewhere lends dignity instead lends a faint sense of being left behind.
古怪gǔguàieccentric; odd; strange and unconventional
Adj 形容词 xíngróngcí
古 gǔ (old, out of step) + 怪 guài (strange). Describes a person, temper, or thing that is peculiar and hard to predict: 性格古怪 "an eccentric character," 古怪的脾气 "an odd temper." Carries a sense of not fitting ordinary norms, often a little hard to get along with.
他的脾气有点古怪。
Tā de píqi yǒudiǎn gǔguài.
His temper is a bit eccentric.
这是一个古怪的老人。
Zhè shì yí ge gǔguài de lǎorén.
This is a strange, eccentric old man.
古板gǔbǎnold-fashioned and rigid; inflexible; stuffy
Adj 形容词 xíngróngcí
古 gǔ (old-fashioned) + 板 bǎn (stiff, a board). Describes someone set in old ways and unwilling to bend: 思想古板 "old-fashioned in outlook," 古板的老师 "a stuffy, rigid teacher." Less about strangeness than about humourless inflexibility.
辨析 biànxī · 古怪 vs. 古板古怪 gǔguài is strange and unpredictable, an oddness you cannot quite anticipate. 古板 gǔbǎn is the opposite kind of fault: too predictable, rigid, stuck in old ways. One surprises you, the other refuses to change at all.

记忆法 jìyìfǎ · Master Retention Image
Hold the dictionary picture at the center of 古: a 十 (ten) standing over a 口 (mouth), the old as what ten mouths, ten generations, have handed down by speech. To be 古 is to reach us from before, carried across many speakers and many years.
From that one image the senses fan out. Let it be a span of time and you get antiquity: 古代 ancient times, 古老 the age-old, 远古 the remote past, 自古 since the beginning. Let it be the things the past handed down and you get the classical and the antique: 古典 the canonical, 古文 the old prose, 古董 the prized object, 古迹 the surviving site, 考古 the digging that reads them. And let it cling too tightly to a person and it turns to the quaint and the odd: 古怪 the eccentric, 古板 the inflexible. Whenever you meet 古, ask what age it carries, and whether that age lends dignity or simply leaves its bearer behind: 古往今来, throughout all the ages.
