The Mongol conquest of China was the largest and most consequential episode of the Mongol Empire's expansion — a process that took more than sixty years and involved three separate campaigns against three different Chinese polities. Genghis Khan (成吉思汗 Chéngjísīhán, r. 1206–1227) began the assault on the Jin dynasty of northern China, but it was his grandson Kublai Khan (忽必烈 Hūbìliè, 1215–1294) who finally completed the conquest by destroying the Southern Song.
The Southern Song (南宋 Nán Sòng) was among the most sophisticated civilizations on earth at the time of its fall — urbanized, commercially advanced, and possessed of gunpowder, printing, and navigational technology far ahead of anywhere in Europe. The Mongols, who initially lacked the naval capacity for amphibious operations, required decades and considerable Chinese technical assistance to breach Song defenses. The final Song loyalists were defeated at the naval Battle of Yamen (崖山之战 Yáshān zhī Zhàn) in 1279, where a Song minister reportedly threw himself into the sea carrying the last child emperor rather than submit.
Kublai Khan formally proclaimed the Yuan dynasty (元朝 Yuáncháo) in 1271 — before the conquest was fully complete — choosing a Chinese dynastic name drawn from the Yijing's (易经) opening hexagram: 元 yuán, meaning "beginning" or "primacy." The capital was established at Dadu (大都 Dàdū, "Great Capital," on the site of modern Beijing), where Kublai built a palace complex that Marco Polo would later describe in terms that strained his readers' credulity.
The Yuan dynasty thus ruled China from 1271 to 1368 — ninety-seven years. By the standards of Chinese dynasties, this was brief. The question of why the Mongols, who conquered half the known world, could not sustain control of China for even a century is one of the central questions of East Asian history.

The Yuan dynasty formalized a social hierarchy explicitly structured around ethnicity and the order of conquest — a system without precedent in Chinese imperial history, where Confucian meritocracy had at least nominally subordinated birth to examination achievement. Under the Yuan, a person's legal status, tax burden, access to office, and even the penalties applied to crimes they committed or suffered were determined first by which of four ethnic-legal categories they belonged to.
At the apex stood the 蒙古人 Měnggǔrén (Mongols), who held supreme political and military authority. They were exempt from many taxes, received higher official salaries, and faced lighter punishments for crimes against members of lower classes. Kublai's court was conducted in Mongolian; Chinese officials who wanted access to power needed to negotiate this linguistic barrier.
The second tier comprised 色目人 Sèmùrén — literally "varied-eyes people," a catch-all category for Central Asians, Persians, Arabs, Turks, Uighurs, and others from west of China. The Mongols had long relied on these groups as administrators, merchants, and financial specialists across the empire. They were trusted intermediaries precisely because they had no deep roots in Chinese society and depended entirely on Mongol patronage. Many Muslims fell into this category, and Islamic merchants became central to Yuan commerce.
The third class was 汉人 Hànrén — the Chinese of the north, including those who had lived under Jin dynasty rule, as well as Jurchen, Khitan, and Korean subjects. Having been conquered earlier, they occupied a middle position: exploited but somewhat familiar to the Mongol administration.
At the bottom were the 南人 Nánrén (Southerners) — the Han Chinese of the former Southern Song. As the last to be conquered, the most numerous, and the most culturally proud, they were viewed by the Mongol court with the most suspicion. They faced the greatest tax burdens, had minimal access to high office, and were the most severely restricted in owning weapons.
The examination system (科举 kējǔ), which had been the defining path to official power for centuries, was suspended for most of the Yuan period and then restored in a heavily modified form that reserved top positions for Mongols regardless of performance. For Chinese literati — men who had devoted their lives to Confucian learning in the expectation of official careers — this was a civilizational rupture. Many withdrew from public life entirely, channeling their energies into painting, calligraphy, drama, and the private cultivation that would so powerfully shape late imperial Chinese culture.
The Yuan court's religious policy was among the most permissive in Chinese imperial history — not from philosophical pluralism exactly, but from a pragmatic Mongol willingness to extract spiritual capital from any source. Kublai Khan famously told Marco Polo that he admired Christ, Moses, Muhammad, and the Buddha equally, and wanted to honor them all. Whether sincere or diplomatic, this posture reflected a Mongol imperial ideology that treated religious specialists as powerful technical experts whose ritual competencies could be put to imperial service.
Tibetan Buddhism (藏传佛教 Zàng chuán Fójiào) enjoyed the highest favor. The Tibetan monk Drogön Chögyal Phagpa (八思巴 Bāsība) became Kublai's state preceptor (国师 guóshī) and designed a new script for the Mongolian language at imperial command. The Yuan court's patronage of Tibetan Buddhism established a relationship between the Mongol state and Tibetan religious hierarchy that would continue through the later Qing dynasty.
Nestorian Christianity (景教 Jǐngjiào) had been present in China since the Tang dynasty and retained a community under Yuan rule. Kublai's own mother, Sorghaghtani Beki, was a Nestorian Christian — a fact of no small significance in how he approached Christians at his court.
Islam (伊斯兰教 Yīsīlán jiào) was practiced by the 色目人 merchant class and by Yuan officials across Central Asia. Mosques were built and maintained. Several important Yuan administrators were Muslim.
Daoism (道教 Dàojiào) and Chinese Buddhism continued with substantial clerical exemptions from taxation and labor service. Confucian scholars, however, occupied an ambiguous position: honored as custodians of civilization but structurally excluded from the corridors of power they had previously dominated.
This religious cosmopolitanism made the Yuan capital Dadu one of the most genuinely international cities of the medieval world — a place where Tibetan lamas, Muslim merchants, Nestorian bishops, Daoist priests, and Confucian scholars all moved through the same imperial city, each patronized by a court that needed their particular services.
One of history's more counterintuitive patterns: the conquest that disrupted Chinese official culture produced a flowering of Chinese vernacular literature that stands among the greatest in the language. Yuan drama — collectively called 元曲 Yuán qǔ — is ranked alongside Tang poetry (唐诗 Táng shī) and Song lyric verse (宋词 Sòng cí) as one of the three peaks of classical Chinese literature.
The mechanism is not difficult to understand. When the civil examination system was suspended or severely restricted, the thousands of educated Chinese men who had trained for careers in government service found themselves with their ambitions blocked and their social status in freefall. Cut off from official careers, many turned to writing — and specifically to writing for the new urban theatrical culture that was expanding rapidly in Yuan-era cities. Drama was a popular form with broad audiences, modest social prestige in traditional Chinese terms, and no imperial gatekeeping. It became, paradoxically, the form through which displaced literati could reach the widest audiences.
The dominant Yuan dramatic form was 杂剧 zájù (variety drama) — structured plays of typically four acts (折 zhé) with songs (曲 qǔ) in a fixed musical mode, spoken dialogue, and often a wedge (楔子 xiēzi) prologue or epilogue. The songs were composed in a sophisticated system of musical modes and rhyme schemes. The greatest Yuan playwrights mastered both the literary and theatrical demands of the form.
The undisputed master was 关汉卿 Guān Hànqīng (c. 1220–c. 1300), who wrote over sixty plays of which around eighteen survive. His most celebrated work, 窦娥冤 Dòu É Yuān ("The Injustice Done to Dou E," also translated as "Snow in Midsummer"), tells the story of a young widow wrongly condemned to death. Her execution produces a supernatural response — snow falls in midsummer, drought follows for three years — as heaven acknowledges the injustice the human legal system failed to correct. The play encodes both social criticism of Yuan-era corruption and a cosmological claim: the universe itself responds to moral wrong. Guān Hànqīng is often called the Shakespeare of Chinese drama.
Other major playwrights include 王实甫 Wáng Shífǔ, whose 西厢记 Xīxiāng Jì ("Romance of the Western Chamber") became one of the most beloved love stories in Chinese literary history, and 马致远 Mǎ Zhìyuǎn, whose autumn meditation piece 天净沙·秋思 "Tiānjìngshā · Qiū Sī" is perhaps the most memorized poem in the language.

The Venetian merchant Marco Polo (马可·波罗 Mǎkě Bōluó, 1254–1324) arrived at the Yuan court around 1275 with his father and uncle, merchants who had already visited Kublai's court a decade earlier. Marco Polo claims to have spent seventeen years in Kublai's service, traveling widely across China and serving in administrative positions before returning to Venice around 1295 with extraordinary stories. Imprisoned during a war with Genoa, he dictated his account — known in English as The Travels of Marco Polo — to the romance writer Rustichello da Pisa.
The Travels described Dadu (which Polo called Cambaluc, from the Mongolian Khanbaliq "city of the Khan") as a grid-planned city of extraordinary size and grandeur, with paper currency, coal for fuel, a sophisticated postal relay system, and palace complexes that dwarfed anything in Europe. He described Hangzhou (杭州 Hángzhōu, the former Southern Song capital, which he called Quinsai) as the most magnificent city in the world, with a population he estimated at two million and a canal system more elaborate than Venice's.
Whether Marco Polo actually visited China has been debated by historians for centuries. Skeptics note that he fails to mention the Great Wall, chopsticks, tea, footbinding, or Chinese writing — all things that seem impossible to overlook. Some scholars suggest his account may have been compiled from Persian and Arabic sources rather than direct observation, or that he reached the Mongol domain in Central Asia but not China proper. Defenders point out that the Great Wall as tourists see it today is largely Ming-era construction built after his visit, and that many of his specific claims have been verified by Chinese archival sources.
Whatever the historical verdict, the cultural significance of the Travels is beyond dispute. It shaped European imagination of China for centuries, contributed the word "Cathay" (from Khitai, a name for northern China) to the European vocabulary, and inspired Columbus — who was seeking a sea route to Polo's "Cipangu" (Japan) and "Cathay" when he encountered the Americas instead.
In Chinese, 马可·波罗 is studied primarily for what he says about the Yuan — the description of Dadu's layout, the postal relay system (驿站 yìzhàn), paper money (纸币 zhǐbì), and administrative structures have been compared to Chinese records with interesting results. He serves as an external mirror in which the Yuan dynasty's own cosmopolitanism becomes visible.
After Kublai Khan's death in 1294, the Yuan dynasty entered a period of accelerating internal crisis. Eight emperors succeeded to the throne in the thirty-five years between 1307 and 1333 — an average reign of less than four years — as factions at court fought over succession. The Mongolian elite had never resolved the fundamental tension between the steppe tradition of collective clan leadership and the Chinese imperial tradition of designated dynastic succession.
Economic mismanagement compounded political instability. The Yuan government had inherited a sophisticated Song-era paper currency system and proceeded to destroy it through over-issuance. By the mid-fourteenth century, hyperinflation had made paper notes nearly worthless, destroying commerce and devastating the livelihoods of merchants and ordinary people alike. The government's response — printing yet more currency — accelerated the collapse. This episode remains one of the earliest documented cases of hyperinflation in world history.
The 1340s brought the Black Death (known in China as epidemic outbreaks of uncertain exact identification) and catastrophic flooding of the Yellow River (黄河 Huánghé). The floods destroyed farmland across the North China Plain and forced millions of peasants off the land. When the Yuan government conscripted hundreds of thousands of workers — mostly Southerners — to repair Yellow River dikes in brutal conditions, it lit the fuse of rebellion.
The 红巾军 Hóngjīnjūn (Red Turban Army) began its uprising in 1351, drawing on a volatile mix of Maitreya Buddhist millenarianism (the White Lotus Society, 白莲教 Báiliánjiào), genuine popular desperation, and the organizational energy of secret religious networks. From this chaos emerged a figure of extraordinary personal force: 朱元璋 Zhū Yuánzhāng (1328–1398), a peasant who had lost his entire family to famine and disease, briefly been a Buddhist monk, and joined the Red Turban forces before methodically outcompeting every rival to become the paramount rebel leader.
In 1368, Zhu Yuanzhang's forces took Dadu. The last Yuan emperor, Toghon Temür, fled north rather than fight — an exit that preserved Mongol lives but ended the dynasty. Zhu Yuanzhang proclaimed the 明朝 Míngcháo (Ming dynasty), named for "brightness" or "illumination," with his capital initially at Nanjing. The Mongols retreated to the steppe and the remnant Yuan court (sometimes called the Northern Yuan, 北元 Běi Yuán) continued in exile for decades, never fully abandoning its claim to China.
