字源 zìyuán Etymology & Structure

非 fēi is a pictograph of two wings spreading in opposite directions. The oracle-bone and bronze forms show a pair of wings, or the two sides of a bird in flight, pulling away from a central spine to left and right. The two halves face apart, and from that image of things turned against each other comes the core idea: to oppose, to be contrary, and so to negate. 非 is itself a Kangxi radical, the head of its own small family of characters, and it keeps its symmetry in the modern shape: a vertical stem flanked by three short strokes mirrored on each side.

From "set against, contrary" the character spreads into three living senses:

1. Not, non-, the bare negator. 非 negates a noun or a quality, often in a formal or written register: 非常 fēicháng (extremely, literally not-ordinary), 并非 bìngfēi (is not in fact), 非法 fēifǎ (illegal, not-lawful).
2. Wrong, fault, what is not right. The moral edge of negation, the thing that fails the standard: 是非 shìfēi (right and wrong), 不分是非 (unable to tell right from wrong), 文过饰非 (to gloss over one's faults).
3. Africa (in transliteration). Used purely for its sound to render the continent: 非洲 Fēizhōu (Africa), 南非 Nánfēi (South Africa). Here the meaning is set aside and only the syllable fēi remains.

The thread is opposition. Whether 非 stands against a fact (it is not so), against a standard (this is wrong), or against an ordinary baseline (not-ordinary, hence extreme), the two wings are always pulling apart from the thing they negate.

非常 fēicháng Not-Ordinary: the Intensifier 非
语义洞见 yǔyì dòngjiàn · Semantic Insight

The most common word a learner meets with 非 is one where the negation has flipped into emphasis. 非常 fēicháng is literally 非 (not) plus (ordinary, constant): "not ordinary," and so "extraordinarily, extremely." A thing that is not ordinary is by implication far off the usual scale, and Chinese reads that distance as intensity. 非常好 means "extremely good," 非常感谢 "thanks very much."

This makes 非常 a near-neighbor of the everyday intensifiers hěn (very) and tài (too). is the neutral, almost grammatical "very" that props up most adjectives; 非常 is stronger and a touch more emphatic; carries an edge of excess, often "too much." For the full contrast between excess and degree, see the 太 entry. Read 非常 always as the wings of 非 spreading away from the ordinary: the further from common, the more extreme.

非常 fēicháng extremely; very; unusual; extraordinary
ADV/ADJ 副词 fùcí
非 fēi (not) + cháng (ordinary). As an adverb before an adjective it means "extremely" (非常高兴 "extremely happy"); as an adjective before a noun it keeps the older sense "extraordinary, exceptional" (非常时期 "extraordinary times").
这部电影非常好看。
Zhè bù diànyǐng fēicháng hǎokàn.
This film is extremely good.

辨析 biànxī · 非常 vs. 很 vs. 太 hěn is the neutral default "very," needed to prop up most adjectives in a plain sentence. 非常 is genuinely stronger, "extremely," and adds emphasis. tài leans toward excess, "too," and often pairs with : 太贵了 "too expensive." Reach for 非常 when you mean a high degree without the note of "too much."

非法 fēifǎ The Negator: Not, Unless, Non-
语法洞见 yǔfǎ dòngjiàn · Grammatical Insight

Beyond the everyday bù and 没 méi, Chinese has a more formal negator in 非. It denies category or identity rather than action: 非 X means "not (a) X." As a prefix it builds the equivalents of English un-, il-, and non-: 非法 fēifǎ (illegal), 非正式 fēizhèngshì (informal), 非主流 fēizhǔliú (non-mainstream).

Two grammatical patterns are worth holding onto. 除非 chúfēi means "unless," literally "except if not": 除非你去,否则我也不去 "unless you go, I won't go either." And the classical frame 非…不可 fēi…bùkě, "if not... then not allowed," expresses strong necessity: 非去不可 "simply must go, there is no not-going." In both, 非 sets up an opposition that the rest of the sentence resolves, the two wings of negation framing a single inescapable conclusion.

非法 fēifǎ illegal; unlawful

成语 chéngyǔ Idioms & Set Phrases
非同小可 fēi tóng xiǎo kě no small matter: serious, of great importance Lit: not-the-same-as-trivial. 小可 means a small or trivial thing, and 非同 negates it: this is not on a par with the trivial, so treat it with weight. 这件事非同小可 "this is no small matter."
是非曲直 shì fēi qū zhí right and wrong, crooked and straight: the true merits of a case Lit: right-wrong-crooked-straight. The four poles by which a dispute is judged. To 分清是非曲直 is to sort out who is truly in the right, free of bias.
啼笑皆非 tí xiào jiē fēi unable to laugh or cry: caught between amusement and dismay Lit: crying-laughing-both-wrong. Neither weeping nor laughing fits the situation, the awkward state of finding something at once absurd and exasperating. 令人啼笑皆非 "leaves one not knowing whether to laugh or cry."
为非作歹 wéi fēi zuò dǎi to do evil; to commit crimes and wrongdoing Lit: do-wrong-make-evil. 非 (wrong) and 歹 dǎi (bad, evil) pair up to name flagrant wrongdoing. Said of those who run riot doing harm: 为非作歹的歹徒 "evildoers who run amok."
记忆法 jìyìfǎ · Master Retention Image

See the two wings of 非 spreading apart, three strokes mirrored on the left, three on the right, pulling away from the spine in opposite directions. That image of things set against each other is the whole character. 非 is whatever stands opposed to the thing named.

Set it against a fact and it is plain denial: 并非如此, that is not so. Set it against a standard and it is fault: 是非, right and wrong. Set it against the ordinary and the opposition reads as distance, and distance reads as intensity: 非常, not-ordinary, hence extreme. And in 除非 and 非…不可, those same wings frame the one path left open, the exception or the necessity. Whenever you meet 非, find the thing it is turned against, and its sense will follow.
