常 cháng = 尚 (shàng, the phonetic) + 巾 (jīn, cloth). A pictophonetic compound: 巾, the cloth radical at the base, supplies the meaning, while 尚 on top supplies the sound (shàng → cháng). The original referent was a long lower garment, a length of cloth that hung full and steady. From "the long, full-hanging cloth" the character generalized to its lasting modern senses, and the concrete garment meaning was later written with the separate character 裳.

Three senses grow from the idea of what hangs steady and endures:

1. Constant, lasting, unchanging. What persists rather than passing: 经常 jīngcháng (regularly), 常常 chángcháng (often), and the philosophical 无常 wúcháng (impermanence).
2. Ordinary, common, normal. What is usual rather than special: 平常 píngcháng (ordinary), 正常 zhèngcháng (normal), 通常 tōngcháng (usually).
3. The constant principle. The standing rule or shared ground: 常识 chángshí (common sense), and the classical 纲常 gāngcháng, the constant bonds of moral order.

The thread is endurance. Whether the subject is how often something happens, how ordinary it is, or what truth holds firm over time, 常 names what does not change: the steady cloth of the everyday.

Beneath frequency and ordinariness lies the oldest sense of 常: the constant, the principle that holds firm. 常识 chángshí, "constant knowledge," is the common sense everyone is assumed to share. In classical thought the 五常 wǔcháng are the five constant virtues, and 纲常 gāngcháng names the enduring bonds of the moral order. Against this stands the Buddhist 无常 wúcháng, impermanence: the teaching that nothing in fact stays constant, that all things rise and pass.

This is why 常 can feel reassuring and unremarkable at once. What is 常 is what you can count on, the steady backdrop that does not surprise you. To say a thing is 反常 fǎncháng, against the constant, is to mark it as strange or alarming precisely because the 常 is what we expect the world to keep doing.

家常便饭 jiā cháng biàn fàn an everyday home meal: a common, unremarkable occurrence Lit: home-ordinary-simple-meal. Literally plain home cooking, used figuratively for anything that happens so routinely it is no big deal: 加班对他来说是家常便饭 "working late is routine for him."
