兴致高涨 xìngzhì gāozhǎng · Spirits Running High

高兴 (gāoxìng) is 高 (high) plus 兴 (xìng, aroused interest, animation): spirits raised high, the same vertical metaphor English uses in "high spirits" and "feeling down." 兴 is a polyphone whose two readings split one idea of rising. Read xīng, first tone, it is the verb to rise or flourish: 兴起 (rise up), 兴旺 (prosperous), 复兴 (revival, as in the official phrase about national rejuvenation). Read xìng, fourth tone, the rising moves indoors and becomes mood: 高兴 (glad), 兴趣 (xìngqù, interest), 兴奋 (xīngfèn is the exception that keeps first tone, excitement), and 尽兴 (jìnxìng, to enjoy oneself to the full, the host's parting wish at a banquet).

Grammatically 高兴 earns its keep. It takes degree adverbs like any adjective (很高兴, 特别高兴), and it takes a following verb phrase: 很高兴认识你 ("very glad to know you") is the fixed formula of introductions, and 我很高兴你来了 ("I'm glad you came") shows the pattern with a full clause. The negative 不高兴 understates displeasure the way English "not happy" does: 老板不高兴了 means storm clouds, not a neutral absence of joy.

四种快乐 sì zhǒng kuàilè · Four Kinds of Happy 高兴 gāoxìng → glad, right now : reactive and momentary ; 见到你很高兴
开心 kāixīn → having a good time : "open-hearted" ; 玩得很开心
快乐 kuàilè → the wishing word : 生日快乐! 新年快乐! ; also sustained cheer
幸福 xìngfú → deep wellbeing : a good life, not a good mood ; 幸福的家庭
Test: you can 祝 (wish) someone 快乐 or 幸福, but not 高兴; gladness can't be scheduled
从心情到人生 · From Mood to Life

The four words ascend in depth. 高兴 and 开心 are the daily pair, close enough to swap in most sentences, though 开心 ("heart opened") leans toward enjoyment in progress (孩子们玩得很开心, the kids are having a great time) while 高兴 leans toward gladness at something (听到这个消息我很高兴, glad to hear the news). 快乐 (kuàilè, "swift joy," sharing the joy-reading of the music character 乐) owns the festival calendar: every holiday greeting ends in it. 幸福 (xìngfú) is different in kind: built from 幸 (good fortune) and 福 (the blessing character pasted on every door at New Year), it names the settled happiness of a life going well. Advertising sells 幸福; weddings promise it; surveys measure it. Announcing 我很幸福 is a life report, not a mood report.

The unhappy side of the ledger, for completeness: 难过 (nánguò, sad, "hard to get through"), 伤心 (shāngxīn, grieved, "wounded heart"), and 生气 (shēngqì, angry, "generating qi," the TCM physiology of rage preserved in the everyday verb). The heart radical 忄 or 心 anchors most of the emotion lexicon, filing feelings where classical China located them, in the heart that thinks and feels at once.
