物理
wùlǐPhysics in Chinese is "the pattern of things," a phrase lifted from a Song-dynasty program for investigating the world.
物理 (wùlǐ) joins 物 (wù, thing, matter) with 理 (lǐ, principle, inner pattern). 理 began as a concrete craftsman's word: the veins in a piece of jade, the grain a carver must follow rather than fight. Song-dynasty Neo-Confucians promoted it into the central term of their philosophy, the ordering principle running through everything, and their slogan 格物致知 (géwù zhìzhī, "investigate things to extend knowledge," from the Great Learning) became the classical warrant for empirical study. When 19th-century translators needed a word for physics, 物理 was waiting: the pattern of things, a compound that had meant roughly "the way things are" for centuries.
The discipline name stabilized as 物理学 through Japanese (butsurigaku), part of the shared Sino-Japanese scientific vocabulary of that era. The older translation, worth knowing because it names university buildings and old books, was 格致 (gézhì), straight from the Neo-Confucian slogan. A student who says 我物理不好 ("my physics is bad") is deploying a Song philosophical term to complain about homework.

力 (lì) is an old pictograph, usually read as an arm flexing or a plow pressing into earth, and it never lost its bodily sense: 力气 (lìqi) is physical strength, 努力 (nǔlì) is to exert effort. Physics simply formalized it, and the discipline's compounds stay legible to any reader: friction is "rubbing force," gravity is "heavy force," pressure is "pressing force." The last of these leaks back into daily life; 压力 is the standard word for psychological stress, so a physics teacher can joke that students under 压力 should recall that pressure equals force over area, and spreading the load reduces it.
Work and energy follow the same pattern of borrowed ordinary words. 功 (gōng), achievement or merit (the 功 of 功夫 gōngfu), was chosen for the physicist's "work"; 能 (néng), ability, grounds 能量 (néngliàng, energy), 动能 (kinetic energy, "moving energy"), and 势能 (potential energy, "positional energy," using the strategist's word 势 for latent advantage). The chain 能源 (néngyuán, energy resources) carries the physics word into headlines about power grids and 新能源汽车, "new-energy vehicles," the official term for electric cars.
电 (diàn) meant lightning for three thousand years; the traditional form 電 shows the rain radical over a bolt. When electricity needed a name, the bolt got the job, and the compounds now saturate daily vocabulary: 电话 (electric speech, telephone), 电脑 (electric brain, computer), 电影 (electric shadows, movies), 电池 (electric pool, battery), 充电 (to charge, also used for recharging oneself with rest or study). Physics keeps the formal end: 电流 (current, "electric flow"), 电压 (voltage, "electric pressure"), 电阻 (resistance, "electric obstruction"), a plumbing metaphor identical to the one English teachers use.
光 (guāng, light) heads its own transparent family: 光速 (guāngsù, the speed of light), 光年 (guāngnián, light-year), 激光 (jīguāng, laser, "stimulated light," a translation of the acronym's actual physics and a rare case where the Chinese term is more informative than the English). Waves are 波 (bō), so light waves, sound waves, and the microwave oven (微波炉, "micro-wave stove") share a morpheme, and 波长 is wavelength. The vocabulary of optics was partly ancient: the Mohist canon (墨经, c. 4th century BCE) already recorded pinhole-image experiments, a fact Chinese physics textbooks cite with some pride.
The twentieth century's physics translated cleanly. 量子 (liàngzi, quantum) is "quantity-unit," with the same noun-forming 子 as 原子 (atom) and 电子 (electron); 量子力学 is quantum mechanics. 相对论 (xiāngduìlùn, relativity) is "mutual-relative theory," and 时空 (shíkōng, spacetime) compresses time and space into two syllables. The particle zoo runs on 子: 质子 (proton, "substance unit"), 中子 (neutron, "middle unit"), 光子 (photon), 夸克 (kuākè, quark, a pure sound-loan for a word that was a pure sound in English too).
These terms are unusually present in ordinary Chinese news. China's quantum-communication satellite 墨子号 (Mòzǐ hào, named for the Mohist philosopher whose canon recorded those early optics experiments), the 500-meter FAST radio telescope, and a sequence of 量子计算机 announcements have made 量子 a headline word, with the usual side effect: 量子 has also become the prefix of choice for pseudoscientific products, and 量子波动速读 ("quantum wave-motion speed reading") courses for children were a notorious scam shut down in 2019. A physics word's celebrity, in any language, is measurable by the fraud it attracts.
Physics: the pattern of things. 物理学家 is a physicist. The school subject triad 数理化 (math-physics-chemistry) names the science track in one three-character breath.
Force; strength. From plow-muscle pictograph to Newton's F, while keeping its everyday jobs in 力气 (strength) and 努力 (to strive). The measure of force, the newton, is 牛顿, which is also Newton's name.
Energy. Physics term and self-help term alike: 正能量 (positive energy) is the government-endorsed phrase for uplifting content, a usage physicists did not authorize.
Electricity, formerly lightning. The most productive tech morpheme in the language: 电话, 电脑, 电影, 电池, 停电 (power outage). 来电 means both "power is back" and "romantic spark."
The speed of light. Colloquially any blinding speed: 光速下班 is leaving work the second the clock strikes, a usage every office knows.
Quantum. 量子力学 is quantum mechanics; 量子纠缠 (entanglement, "quantum entwining") supplies metaphors for codependent relationships in internet slang.
