化学 (huàxué) is "transformation-study." 化 (huà) is the language's general verb of change: it sits inside 变化 (biànhuà, change), 文化 (wénhuà, culture, "transformation by writing"), and 消化 (xiāohuà, digestion). Naming chemistry after transformation is more accurate than the European name, which still carries the fossil of alchemy. Chinese had its own alchemy, 炼丹 (liàndān, "refining the elixir"), the Daoist art that pursued immortality pills for emperors and, along the way, produced gunpowder; the modern discipline kept none of that vocabulary and started clean with 化.

The term itself entered Chinese in the 1850s through missionary translation work in Shanghai, and was then borrowed by Japanese (kagaku), one of the currents in the large two-way traffic of scientific vocabulary between the two languages in that half-century. From 化学 the compounds fall out mechanically: 化学家 (chemist), 化学反应 (chemical reaction), 化肥 (huàféi, chemical fertilizer), and the school-hallway split into 有机化学 (organic, "having-mechanism") and 无机化学 (inorganic).

Inside each element character, the non-radical half usually approximates the international name: 钠 (nà) carries 内 for natrium, 镁 (měi) carries for magnesium, 氦 (hài) carries 亥 for helium. A handful of the most common elements got meaning instead of sound, and these are small poems. 氢 (qīng, hydrogen) is built on 轻, "light," the lightest gas. 氧 (yǎng, oxygen) is built on 养, "to nourish," the gas that sustains. 氮 (dàn, nitrogen) is built on 淡, "dilute," the gas that thins the air's oxygen. 氯 (lǜ, chlorine) is built on 绿, "green," for the gas's visible color, exactly the etymology of "chlorine" from Greek chloros.

The system is productive to this day. When the seventh row of the periodic table was completed, the Chinese language authorities approved new characters for the new elements, including 鿬 (tián) for tennessine (element 117, confirmed 2016) and 鿫 (ào) for oganesson, each following the old formula of state radical plus phonetic. The Chinese periodic table is thus the world's only one where every entry is a single syllable and a single glyph, which makes formula recitation in a Chinese classroom (二氧化碳, "two-oxygen-transform-carbon," CO₂) read like grammar rather than nomenclature.

Most of the metal characters were coined by one man. Xu Shou (徐寿, 1818–1884), a self-taught Qing polymath who built China's first steamship, spent his later career in the translation department of the Jiangnan Arsenal in Shanghai, working with the British missionary John Fryer. Their 1871 rendering of a Western chemistry textbook, 化学鉴原 (Huàxué Jiànyuán, "Mirror of the Origins of Chemistry"), needed names for dozens of elements Chinese had never distinguished, and Xu's solution was the formula still in use: take the metal radical 钅, attach a phonetic that approximates the Western sound, and mint a character. 镁, 钙, 锌 (xīn, zinc), and their kin are his.

It was a controversial move. Inventing characters wholesale ran against two thousand years of philological conservatism, and rival translation schemes proposed multi-character phonetic transcriptions instead (the way 咖啡 spells "coffee"). Xu's one-character system won because chemistry needs its atoms notationally atomic: 硫酸钠 (sodium sulfate) parses instantly as sulfur-acid-sodium, which no transcription scheme could match. His coinages are among the very few characters in the modern script whose inventor, date, and motive are all documented.

从分子到味精 · From Molecules to MSG

The structural vocabulary is compact and transparent: 分子 (fēnzǐ, molecule, "divided unit"), 原子 (yuánzǐ, atom, "original unit"), 离子 (lízǐ, ion, "departed unit," for the particle that has left electrons behind), all sharing the noun-forming 子 of 电子 (diànzǐ, electron). A reaction is 反应 (fǎnyìng), an experiment is 实验 (shíyàn, "test against reality"), and the lab is the 实验室. Acids are 酸 (suān), which is also the everyday word for "sour," and bases are 碱 (jiǎn), so pH strips in a Chinese classroom test 酸碱度, "the degree of sour and alkaline."

Everyday life keeps the chemistry close to the surface. Vinegar is 醋 (cù) and its acidity is the same 酸 you taste; carbonated drinks are 汽水 (qìshuǐ, "gas water") containing 二氧化碳; the MSG in the kitchen is 味精 (wèijīng, "essence of flavor"), and the stern label 不含化学添加剂 ("contains no chemical additives") does the same rhetorical work it does in English. The word 化学 itself can carry a whiff of suspicion in food talk, and 纯天然 ("purely natural") is its marketing antonym.
