数学 (shùxué) is a two-character compound of perfect transparency: 数 (shù, number) plus 学 (xué, study), the pattern that names most academic disciplines in Chinese (化学 chemistry is "transformation-study," 物理 physics is "the study of the patterns of things"). The older names tell a different story about what the subject was. Traditional Chinese mathematics called itself 算学 (suànxué, "the study of calculation") or 算术 (suànshù, "the art of calculation"), and 算术 survives today as the word for arithmetic. The shift from 算 (calculating, the thing you do with a suanpan or counting rods) to 数 (number as an object of study) tracks the late-Qing absorption of Western academic mathematics into Chinese schools.

数 itself is worth a look. Read shù, it is the noun "number"; read shǔ, third tone, it is the verb "to count." 数数 (shǔ shù), the first math any child does, is literally "count numbers," the same character twice in its two readings. The polyphony is old and systematic: the verb reading is the action, the noun reading is the result.

The one trap in the set is division. 除以 (chúyǐ) means "divided by," so 十除以二 is 10 ÷ 2 = 5. But bare 除 in the older reading order means "divide into": 二除十 also equals five, with the divisor first. Chinese textbooks drill the distinction, and everyday speech has settled firmly on 除以. The multiplication table behind 乘 is the 九九表 (jiǔjiǔ biǎo), the 45-phrase chant covered on the abacus page, memorized by every schoolchild and recited with a rhythm that makes 七八五十六 (7×8=56) as automatic as a phone number.

A few more symbols every student handles daily: 大于 (dàyú, greater than) and 小于 (xiǎoyú, less than), where the logic is "big relative to" and "small relative to"; 约等于 (yuē děngyú) for ≈; and 平方 (píngfāng, square) and 立方 (lìfāng, cube), so that 三的平方 is 3². The names are stacked from ordinary words; almost nothing in school mathematics requires a character a literate reader would not already know.

Where English math vocabulary is a museum of Greek and Latin (geometry, algebra, calculus), the Chinese terms are mostly self-describing compounds coined by translators. 代数 (dàishù, algebra) is "substitute numbers," which is what a variable does. 微积分 (wēijīfēn, calculus) is "tiny-accumulate-divide": 微分 (differentiation, splitting into the infinitely small) plus 积分 (integration, accumulating it back). 统计 (tǒngjì, statistics) is "unified counting," 概率 (gàilǜ, probability) is "approximate rate," and 方程 (fāngchéng, equation) is a term lifted directly from a chapter title of the Han-dynasty Nine Chapters, where it named the rod-arrangement method for systems of linear equations.

The most storied coinage is 几何 (jǐhé, geometry). In 1607 the Ming scholar-official Xu Guangqi (徐光启) and the Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci published 几何原本 (Jǐhé Yuánběn), a translation of the first six books of Euclid's Elements, the first major Western scientific text rendered into Chinese. In classical Chinese 几何 was a question: "how much?" Cao Cao uses it in his most famous poem (对酒当歌,人生几何 "with wine before us, sing; how much is a life?"). Xu and Ricci turned the language's own question about quantity into the name of the discipline, with the bonus that jǐhé faintly echoes "geo." Their translation also fixed (point), 线 (line), (plane), and (angle) in the senses every Chinese schoolchild now learns.

九章与祖率 · The Nine Chapters and Zu's Ratio

The foundational text is the Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art (九章算术 Jiǔzhāng Suànshù, compiled by the 1st century CE), a problem book of 246 worked examples organized by application: field measurement, grain exchange, fair taxation, canal engineering. Its method is algorithmic rather than axiomatic; where Euclid proves, the Nine Chapters computes, and its procedures include a rule equivalent to Gaussian elimination and the first systematic use of negative numbers. The right-triangle relation appears as the 勾股定理 (gōugǔ dìnglǐ), named for 勾 (gōu, the shorter leg) and 股 (gǔ, the longer leg); the 3-4-5 triangle is already stated in the Zhoubi Suanjing (周髀算经), a Han astronomical text, which is why Chinese textbooks do not call the theorem Pythagorean.

The most celebrated single result belongs to Zu Chongzhi (祖冲之, 429–500 CE), who bounded pi between 3.1415926 and 3.1415927 and offered the approximation 密率 (mìlǜ, "precise ratio") of 355/113, correct to six decimal places. The bound stood as the world's best for about nine hundred years, until Persian and Indian mathematicians surpassed it in the 14th and 15th centuries. His method extended Liu Hui's (刘徽) 3rd-century algorithm of inscribing polygons in a circle and doubling the sides, pushed to a 24,576-gon, an astonishing feat of counting-rod endurance. Modern China keeps the memory close: 祖冲之 names a lunar crater, a satellite, and a series of quantum computers.
