日月为明 rì yuè wéi míng · Sun and Moon Make Bright

is the schoolroom favorite of compound ideographs: (sun) beside (moon), the two light-givers joined into brightness itself. From physical light it spread along every path English's "bright" and "clear" also travel: intelligence (聪明, clever), understanding (明白), explanation (说明, to make clear), the next sunrise (明天, tomorrow, "the bright day"), and open visibility (明显, obvious). It is also the name of the Ming dynasty, chosen for exactly these radiant associations. (bái, white) contributes plainness: what is white is unmarked, undyed, evident. Together, 明白 is what is lit and plain, and as a verb, to have things so.

's own extensions repay attention, because they run through daily speech: 说白了 ("to say it white") is "to put it bluntly"; 白话 is the plain vernacular that replaced classical Chinese as the written standard in the early twentieth century; and, from a separate old sense of "in vain," 白 before a verb means fruitlessly or for free: 白跑一趟 (a wasted trip), 白吃白喝 (to eat and drink at someone else's expense). A learner who knows both 白s stops being puzzled by menus and complaints alike.

知道的家族 zhīdào de jiāzú The Knowing Family
四个"" sì gè dǒng · Four Verbs of Knowing 知道 zhīdào → know a fact : 我知道他是谁 (I know who he is)
dǒng → comprehend content or a skill : 懂中文 ; 听不懂 (can't follow)
明白 míngbai → grasp what is meant : 明白了! (got it!) ; 我不明白你的意思
了解 liǎojiě → know deeply, be familiar with : 了解中国文化 ; 互相了解
Rising depth: facts → content → intent → familiarity
明白了 · When Understanding Dawns

The four verbs partition knowing, and choosing among them is one of the quiet markers of real fluency. 知道 handles facts and information; telling someone 我知道了 in response to instructions can even sound curt, the "yes, I know" of a teenager. 懂 is comprehension of substance: languages, music, machines, people's hearts (最懂我的人, the person who understands me best). 明白 targets meaning and intent, which is why it is the verb of instructions and explanations, and why 明白了, with the change-of-state 了 of dawning, is the natural "got it." 了解 (using the liǎo reading of 了, "to conclude") is acquaintance in depth: you 了解 a friend's history, a market, a country you have lived in.

明白 also works as an adjective: a 明白人 is a person who sees things clearly, the one at the family council who cuts to the point, and 一个明白人一句话就够了, for a clear-headed person one sentence suffices. The adjective 清楚 (qīngchu, clear) overlaps from the other side: things are 清楚 when they are distinct; a person is 明白 when they see them so. 说清楚 is to state clearly; 想明白 is to think one's way through to clarity, the verb of resolving a dilemma at three in the morning.

常见问题chángjiàn wèntíFrequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between 明白, 懂, 知道, and 了解?
知道 (zhīdào) is knowing a fact; 懂 (dǒng) is comprehending content or a skill (懂中文, 懂音乐); 明白 (míngbai) is grasping what someone means, clarity about intent or explanation; 了解 (liǎojiě) is deeper familiarity with a person or situation. A student 知道 the exam date, 懂 the grammar, 明白 the teacher's instructions, and hopes to 了解 China.
How do you say 'I understand' in conversation?
明白了 (míngbai le) or 懂了 (dǒng le), both with the change-of-state 了: understanding has dawned. In service and military contexts 明白 is the standard acknowledgment of an instruction, like 'understood.'
Why does 白 (white) appear in a word about understanding?
白 means white, hence plain, unmarked, evident. Something 明白 is bright and plain to see. The same logic gives 说白了 ('to put it plainly'), 白话 (plain vernacular language), and 真相大白 (the truth comes fully to light).
