阴阳五行
yīnyáng wǔxíngThe cosmological engine of classical Chinese civilization: two complementary forces and five transformative phases that structure the body, the seasons, the cosmos, and all change.
The character 阴 yīn originally depicted the shaded side of a hill — the northern slope that faces away from the sun, cool, moist, dark. The character 阳 yáng depicted the sunlit side — warm, bright, dry. These were not abstract concepts but descriptions of a specific natural phenomenon: the two faces of a single mountain, each defining the other. You cannot have one without the other; they exist only in relation.
The earliest systematic use of Yin-Yang in cosmological thinking emerges in texts like the 《易经》Yì Jīng (Book of Changes, circa 1000–750 BCE), where the broken line (— —) represents Yin and the unbroken line (——) represents Yang, and their combinations in trigrams and hexagrams describe all possible states of change. The Yin-Yang theory was systematized into a comprehensive cosmological framework by 邹衍 Zōu Yǎn (305–240 BCE), a thinker of the state of Qi who also developed the Five Phases theory and is generally credited as the founder of the Yīn-Yáng school (阴阳家 yīnyángjiā).
The crucial point — one that distinguishes Yin-Yang thought from simple dualism — is that Yin and Yang are not opposites in the Western sense of good vs. evil, light vs. darkness as moral categories. They are complementary and mutually constitutive. Each contains the seed of the other. Yin at its maximum already contains Yang beginning to grow; Yang at its maximum already contains Yin beginning to grow. This is the logic behind the famous 太极图 tàijítú (Taijitu), where the Yin fish has a Yang eye and the Yang fish has a Yin eye. There is no absolute Yin or Yang; everything is a mix, and the proportions constantly shift.
The practical significance of this framing is enormous. In Chinese medicine, health is defined not as the presence of Yang (vitality) and the absence of Yin (passivity) but as the balanced, dynamic equilibrium of both. In political thought, a ruler who is purely Yang — assertive, controlling, active — will exhaust his resources and create brittleness; effective governance requires Yin qualities too (receptivity, yielding, allowing things to develop). In everyday observation, the hottest summer day already contains the seed of winter; the longest night already contains the growing light. 物极必反 wù jí bì fǎn — when things reach their extreme, they necessarily reverse — is the fundamental law of Yin-Yang cosmology.
The circular symbol known in the West as the "Yin-Yang symbol" is properly called the 太极图 tàijítú — the Diagram of the Supreme Ultimate. 太极 tàijí means "great ridgepole" or "supreme ultimate" — the undifferentiated state from which all differentiation emerges. The symbol encodes the core principles of Yin-Yang cosmology with remarkable economy.
The outer circle represents 太极 tàijí — the totality, the undivided wholeness from which Yin and Yang emerge. It has no beginning and no end; it is complete. The S-curve dividing the circle is not a wall but a wave — it moves, suggesting that the boundary between Yin and Yang is always in motion, never fixed. The white (Yang) area contains a small black (Yin) dot; the black (Yin) area contains a small white (Yang) dot. This is the key statement: within maximum Yang there is already nascent Yin; within maximum Yin there is already nascent Yang. Nothing is absolute; transformation is inherent in every state.
The symbol was given its classical form and theoretical foundation by 周敦颐 Zhōu Dūnyí (1017–1073 CE), the Song dynasty thinker who wrote the 《太极图说》Tàijí Túshuō (Explanation of the Diagram of the Supreme Ultimate) — the founding document of Neo-Confucianism. Zhou Dunyi described how 太极 generates through movement Yang, and through stillness Yin, and how these two forces combine to produce the Five Phases, which in turn produce the ten thousand things (万物 wànwù) of the world. This cosmogonic story became the standard account of how the universe works in Chinese philosophical tradition.
The name 太极 tàijí is also the root of 太极拳 tàijíquán — Tai Chi — the martial art that embodies the philosophy in movement: yielding to overcome, slowness that contains power, Yin and Yang expressed through the body.
The conventional translation of 五行 wǔxíng as "Five Elements" is misleading. 行 xíng means "to walk," "to move," "to act" — it is a verb of movement, not a noun of substance. The Five "Phases" or "Processes" are better: they name five modes of transformation, five qualities of change that cycle through all phenomena, not five fundamental substances of which things are made. The Greek "elements" (earth, air, fire, water) were conceived as the material constituents of all matter; the Chinese 五行 are conceived as the characteristic movements or phases that all matter passes through.
The five are: 木 mù (Wood), 火 huǒ (Fire), 土 tǔ (Earth), 金 jīn (Metal), 水 shuǐ (Water). Each names not a substance but a cluster of qualities — a direction of movement, a type of energy, a phase in a cycle. Wood is not literally wood but the quality of growing upward, of spring, of beginnings and initiating expansion. Metal is not literally metal but the quality of contraction, descending, of autumn, of consolidation and hardening.
The power of the Five Phases framework lies in the two interlocking cycles that relate the phases to each other. These cycles make the framework dynamic rather than static — the phases are not a list but a system of ongoing relationships.
The 相生 xiāngshēng cycle (mutual generation, or the "engendering cycle") describes how each phase produces the next: 木生火 mù shēng huǒ (Wood generates Fire — wood feeds flame), 火生土 huǒ shēng tǔ (Fire generates Earth — ash becomes soil), 土生金 tǔ shēng jīn (Earth generates Metal — ore is found in earth), 金生水 jīn shēng shuǐ (Metal generates Water — metal liquefies in heat; also, mountain rock condenses water), 水生木 shuǐ shēng mù (Water generates Wood — water nourishes plants). The cycle is complete and self-sustaining.
The 相克 xiāngkè cycle (mutual overcoming, or the "controlling cycle") describes how each phase restrains another across the circle: 木克土 mù kè tǔ (Wood overcomes Earth — tree roots break soil), 土克水 tǔ kè shuǐ (Earth overcomes Water — earth dams water), 水克火 shuǐ kè huǒ (Water overcomes Fire — water extinguishes flame), 火克金 huǒ kè jīn (Fire overcomes Metal — fire melts metal), 金克木 jīn kè mù (Metal overcomes Wood — an axe cuts wood). This controlling cycle prevents any phase from dominating unchecked.
Together, the two cycles create a self-regulating system: generation without control leads to excess; control without generation leads to stagnation. Health, in traditional Chinese medicine, is the balance of these two cycles operating simultaneously. When a phase is deficient, its generating phase needs support; when a phase is excessive, its controlling phase is invoked to reduce it.

One of the most characteristic features of Five Phases thinking is the construction of elaborate correspondence tables — 五行对应 wǔxíng duìyìng — in which every phenomenon in the natural and human world is assigned to one of the five phases. This is not arbitrary categorization but a theory of resonance: things assigned to the same phase are believed to influence each other. The sour flavor nourishes the liver because both belong to Wood; green foods support Wood energy; spring is the optimal time for Wood-phase treatments in TCM. The system is a map of sympathetic correspondences across all levels of reality.

In traditional Chinese medicine (中医 Zhōngyī), Yin-Yang and the Five Phases are not background philosophy — they are the operating framework of diagnosis and treatment. The body is understood as a microcosm in which the same forces that govern the seasons and the cosmos govern physiology. Disease is not the invasion of a pathogen into a machine but a disruption of dynamic balance — an excess or deficiency in one or more of the five systems, or a breakdown in the generative and controlling relationships between them.
The 五脏 wǔ zàng (five yin organs) — liver 肝, heart 心, spleen 脾, lungs 肺, kidneys 肾 — map directly onto the five phases. Each organ system encompasses far more than its Western anatomical counterpart: the liver system governs not just detoxification but the smooth flow of 气 qì (vital energy), the sinews, the eyes, and the emotion of anger. The heart system governs not just blood pumping but consciousness, speech, and joy. Treatment is a matter of restoring the proper relationships: if the liver (Wood) is overactive and overwhelming the spleen (Earth) in the overcoming cycle, treatment will drain Wood, tonify Earth, and perhaps support Metal to control the overactive Wood.
Acupuncture points are organized along 经络 jīngluò (meridians) — channels through which 气 qì flows — and each meridian belongs to one of the five phases. Treatment points are selected not just by location but by their phase relationships. A Water point on a Wood meridian has a specific effect; a Fire point on a Metal meridian has another. The whole system is a vast network of correspondences that a practitioner must internalize and navigate in real time.
The seasonal implications are taken seriously in classical medicine: spring is the time to support the liver system; summer the heart; autumn the lungs; winter the kidneys. Eating sour foods in spring, bitter foods in summer, and salty foods in winter aligns one's physiology with the season's phase — not superstition but a coherent application of the correspondence logic. Whether or not one accepts the underlying metaphysics, the framework has guided one of the world's great medical traditions for two millennia.
