雷 léi is a compound ideograph: 雨 (rain) sits at the top, and below it three or four 田 (field) shapes fan outward. In oracle-bone and seal-script forms, the field-like marks represent the rolling, spreading sound of thunder across the landscape — a pictographic evocation of rumbling that radiates in all directions from beneath a storm cloud. The image is meteorological before it is symbolic: thunder happens during rain, and it rolls across flat ground.
The 田 components are not "fields" in the agricultural sense here — they are schematic representations of the circular, concentric boom of sound, the same way a struck drum sends rings outward. Early Chinese scribes captured the phenomenon visually rather than phonetically: you see the storm above, you feel the reverberations spreading below.

雷公 (Léigōng, Duke of Thunder) is one of the oldest deities in the Chinese pantheon — attested in the Shanhaijing (山海经, Classic of Mountains and Seas) and venerated across millennia. He is depicted with a bird's beak, eagle's wings, and clawed feet, his body ringed by a series of drums. He beats these drums with a mallet to produce thunder. His human form exists but is secondary; his bird-of-prey physiognomy links him to the pre-agricultural religion of the Yellow River cultures, where raptor-deities commanded storm phenomena.
He works in tandem with 电母 (Diàn Mǔ, Mother of Lightning), who carries two mirrors. She flashes the mirrors to produce the bolt of lightning that precedes thunder. The sequence is cosmologically ordered: light (Diàn Mǔ) comes first, sound (Léigōng) follows — matching what observers actually experience in a storm. The pairing encodes meteorological accuracy inside the myth.
In the Five Phases (五行 wǔxíng) system, thunder is associated with the Wood phase (木 mù), the east, and spring. This is not arbitrary: thunder is the force that breaks the frozen earth open, that announces the thaw, that signals the return of growing energy after winter. Léigōng's drum-beats are the voice of the season turning — the arousing signal that dormant life can stir again. His anger is not punishment; it is vitality, the crack of the earth waking up.
Popular religion across southern China and Taiwan maintains active temples to 雷公 and 电母. Thunder during a drought is a sign the deity is dissatisfied with ritual neglect; thunder at New Year is auspicious, clearing the old year's stagnant energies. In Daoist liturgical texts, 雷 is associated with the voice of heaven (天声 tiānshēng) — not as wrath, but as proclamation.
In the Yijing (易经, Book of Changes), the trigram 震 (Zhèn) represents thunder — and is directly identified with 雷. The trigram is one solid line at the bottom, two broken lines above: ☳. The solid yang line erupts upward through yielding yin.震 is the Arousing, the Shock, the initiating force that breaks through inertia.
In the eight-trigram (八卦 bāguà) system, 震 = east, spring, the eldest son. When this trigram is doubled —震 over 震 — the result is hexagram 51, also called 震 (the Arousing / Shock). The Yijing commentary for hexagram 51 begins: 震, hēng — "Thunder: success." The shock comes; the wise person does not panic but uses the moment of jolting to recalibrate, to clear away the habitual and face what is real.
The Tuanzhuan commentary elaborates: "The shock frightens for a hundred miles — and yet the sacrificial vessel and the libation spoon are not dropped." The highest response to sudden upheaval is not flight but composure and continuity. Thunder announces; it does not destroy. The one who hears thunder and keeps the ritual vessel steady — who is not scattered by the shock — is the one the Yijing endorses.
This cosmological role of 雷 as initiating force resonates through the entire classical tradition. 雷 is not the climax of the storm; it is the beginning of movement. It awakens. It breaks open. In medical cosmology, 雷 corresponds to the liver, which in Chinese medicine governs the free flow of qi — blocked qi produces the stagnation that thunder (metaphorically) must crack open to restore circulation.
