话 huà = 讠 (yán, speech) + 舌 (shé, tongue). The traditional form 話 writes the speech radical in full as ; the simplified 话 compresses it to 讠. Either way the logic is the same: speech put together with the tongue, the organ that shapes it. Where the bare speech radical 讠 marks anything done through the mouth, the added 舌 narrows it to the living, spoken word, the thing the tongue actually produces.

From spoken words, the meaning spreads along three lines:

1. Words, speech, what one says. The literal sense: 说话 shuōhuà (to speak), 一句话 yí jù huà (a single remark), 听话 tīnghuà (to obey, literally "to heed words").
2. A language or dialect. A whole spoken variety: 普通话 pǔtōnghuà (Mandarin, the "common speech"), 广东话 Guǎngdōnghuà (Cantonese), 中国话 (the Chinese language as spoken).
3. A topic or saying. A unit of talk passed between people: 话题 huàtí (topic), 笑话 xiàohua (joke), 童话 tónghuà (fairy tale).

The thread is the spoken word as a living thing that leaves the tongue and travels: said aloud, carried down a wire, shaped into a dialect, or handed around as a story. 话 is talk in motion, distinct from (the written character) and (language as a system).

See the speech radical 讠 standing beside a tongue, 舌. That is the whole character: speech shaped by the tongue, the living spoken word. Everything 话 means is talk in motion as it leaves the mouth.

Said plainly to another person, it is speaking (说话) and being heeded (听话). Carried down a wire, it is the telephone (电话). Standardized across a country, it is a spoken language (普通话). Handed around for amusement or wonder, it is a joke or a tale (笑话, 童话). Keep 话 apart from , the written character, and from , language as a system, and you will always know you are dealing with words that are spoken.
