字源zìyuánEtymology & Structure
字源洞见 zìyuán dòngjiàn · Etymological Insight
短 = 矢 + 豆. The left side 矢 (shǐ, arrow) is the semantic element and the dictionary radical; the right side 豆 (dòu) is the phonetic, lending the syllable rather than its modern meaning of bean. This makes 短 a standard pictophonetic compound: arrow gives the sense, 豆 gives the sound.
The Shuōwén Jiězì ties the arrow to the act of measuring. An arrow is a fixed, manufactured length, the kind of thing a person reaches for when gauging a span by eye. To name something brief, the ancients compared it against this short, hand-held standard: anything falling under the arrow's reach is 短. The 豆, a tall-stemmed ritual food vessel, supplied a second short benchmark in the older reading, so the glyph pairs two small objects to fix the idea of insufficient length.
From concrete length the sense fanned outward. A 短 rope is physically short; a 短 visit is brief in time; a 短 person falls short of stature; and a 短 in someone's character is a place where they come up lacking. The same word that measures a span of cloth measures a span of life or a gap in ability, always by the logic of not enough reach.
Japanese keeps the character as 短 (tan, mijika-i) in words like 短歌 (tanka, the short poem) and 短期 (tanki, short term), preserving both the length and brevity senses intact.

Picture a fletcher laying a single arrow flat across a length of cloth to measure it. The arrow 矢 is his only ruler, and it is short. Whatever the arrow covers in one lay is the unit of 短: brief, small, not far. Beside him stands a tall ritual bean-pot 豆, and the contrast is the whole character: arrow on the left, pot on the right, the short measure forever judged against something taller.
Carry that arrow into every compound. A 短信 (duǎnxìn) is a message as long as one arrow, a quick text. A 短期 (duǎnqī) is a span the arrow covers, a brief term. And a 短处 (duǎnchu) is the spot where someone's arrow falls short of the mark, the place they come up lacking. Wherever the arrow cannot reach, 短 names the gap.
