当 dāng is the simplified form of traditional 當. The traditional 當 is a pictophonetic compound: the 田 (tián, field) at the bottom carries the meaning, while 尚 (shàng) above supplies the sound. The early sense centered on matching or facing a thing of equal value, as one field set against another, which is why so many of the character's senses circle around the idea of correspondence: serving in a matching role, being at the matching moment, and treating one thing as the equal of another.

The mainland simplification 当 keeps a cursive trace of the upper 尚 element (reduced to the small -like top, written with the ⺌ "small" radical) over a 彐-shaped base, dropping the field entirely. The two forms are read identically; only the script differs.

当 is a polyphone, and the reading splits the senses cleanly:

1. dāng (level tone). To serve as, to act as a role: 当老师 dāng lǎoshī (be a teacher). To be right at a time or place: 当时 dāngshí (at that time), 当地 dāngdì (local). And to be obligated: 应当 yīngdāng (ought to).
2. dàng (falling tone). Fitting or proper: 适当 shìdàng (suitable), 恰当 qiàdàng (apt). To regard or treat as: 当作 dàngzuò (treat as). And to pawn: 当铺 dàngpù (pawnshop), from which comes 上当 shàngdàng (to be taken in).

The thread through both readings is the same: a fit between two things. When the fit is a role you take on or a moment you stand in, it is dāng; when it is the suitability of one thing or the equating of one thing with another, it is dàng.

The core verb sense: to take on a role or office. 当老师 dāng lǎoshī (be a teacher), 当兵 dāng bīng (be a soldier), 当父亲 dāng fùqīn (be a father). Unlike shì, which simply equates, 当 frames the role as something one takes up and performs.

He wants to be a doctor.
我哥哥去当兵了。
Wǒ gēge qù dāng bīng le.

应当 yīngdāng Ought To & Of Course
语义洞见 yǔyì dòngjiàn · Semantic Insight

From "to match" grows a sense of fittingness that shades into obligation. If an action fits the situation, then it is what one ought to do. This is the dāng behind 应当 yīngdāng (should, ought to), a close cousin of 应该 yīnggāi but a touch more formal, common in written and legal Chinese.

The same root of "what fits, what is proper" gives the everyday 当然 dāngrán, "of course." Literally "as it ought to be," 当然 marks something as so obviously right that it needs no argument. Spoken on its own it is an emphatic "Naturally!" or "Sure!"

应当 yīngdāng ought to; should; be obliged to
AUX 助动词 zhùdòngcí
yīng (should) + 当 dāng (be fitting). A modal of obligation, near-identical in meaning to 应该 yīnggāi but slightly more formal, so it shows up often in rules, contracts, and writing.
我们应当遵守规则。
Wǒmen yīngdāng zūnshǒu guīzé.
We ought to abide by the rules.
当然 dāngrán of course; naturally; certainly
ADV 副词 fùcí
当 dāng (as it ought) + rán (so). "As it ought to be," hence "of course." Used as a one-word reply (当然! "Of course!") or as an adverb framing a claim as self-evident.
你愿意帮我吗?当然!
Nǐ yuànyì bāng wǒ ma? Dāngrán!
Are you willing to help me? Of course!
担当 dāndāng to take on; to shoulder (responsibility); accountability
V/N 动名词 dòngmíngcí
担 dān (to carry) + 当 dāng (to take up a role). To take responsibility upon oneself; as a noun, the quality of being willing to do so. 有担当 yǒu dāndāng describes a person who steps up rather than dodging.
这个错误由我来担当。
Zhège cuòwù yóu wǒ lái dāndāng.
I will take responsibility for this mistake.
适当 shìdàng Appropriate & Treat As: the dàng Reading
语义洞见 yǔyì dòngjiàn · The Second Reading

Shift the tone from level dāng to falling dàng and the character turns from "the role I take" and "the moment I am in" to "the fit of a thing" and "the equating of one thing with another." 适当 shìdàng and 恰当 qiàdàng both mean fitting or apt. 当作 dàngzuò means to treat one thing as if it were another. And from the sense of giving a thing for its matching value comes the old word for pawning, 当铺 dàngpù (pawnshop), and the vivid 上当 shàngdàng, literally "to go up to the pawnshop counter," now meaning to be deceived or taken in.

The tone is the only audible signal. 当时 dāngshí (at that time) and 恰当 qiàdàng (apt) share the same glyph; the falling tone on the second tells you it is the "fitting / treat-as" sense, not the "moment / role" sense.

适当 shìdàng appropriate; suitable; proper
ADJ 形容词 xíngróngcí
适 shì (to suit) + 当 dàng (to fit). Describes a measure, amount, or action that is right for the situation: 适当的时候 (at an appropriate time), 适当休息 (rest as appropriate).

Qǐng zài shìdàng de shíhou tíxǐng wǒ.
Please remind me at an appropriate time.
当作 dàngzuò to treat as; to regard as; to take for
V 动词 dòngcí
当 dàng (to equate) + zuò (to make, to do). To regard X as Y: 把困难当作机会 (treat difficulty as opportunity). A near-synonym is 当成 dàngchéng. Note the falling tone, which marks it apart from level-tone dāng.
别把我的玩笑当作真的。
Bié bǎ wǒ de wánxiào dàngzuò zhēn de.
Do not take my joke as the truth.
上当 shàngdàng to be fooled; to be taken in; to fall for a trick
V 动词 dòngcí
shàng (to go up to) + 当 dàng (the pawnshop). From the image of being shortchanged at the pawnbroker's counter, it now means to be cheated or deceived. 上当受骗 shàngdàng shòupiàn is the common four-character pairing.
小心,别上当了。
Xiǎoxīn, bié shàngdàng le.
Be careful, do not get taken in.

当机立断 dāng jī lì duàn to decide promptly at the critical moment: act decisively without hesitation Lit: meeting the moment, make the cut at once. 当机 is "right at the opportunity"; 立断 is "decide on the spot." Praise for someone who seizes the decisive instant rather than dithering.
锐不可当 ruì bù kě dāng too sharp to be withstood: an irresistible force Lit: so sharp it cannot be matched. Here 当 means to stand against or block. Said of an advance, an army, or a momentum that nothing can stop.
安步当车 ān bù dàng chē to walk calmly in place of riding: to be content with a simple, unhurried life Lit: walk at ease, treat it as a carriage. Here 当 takes the dàng reading, "to treat as." From a Warring-States anecdote: to stroll on foot and reckon it as good as riding, content without luxury.
记忆法 jìyìfǎ · Master Retention Image

Hold one idea at the center of 当: a fit between two things. In the traditional 當 it is two fields set against each other, matched in value. Every sense radiates from that match. Take on a role that fits you and you 当老师, become a teacher. Stand at the moment that matches the event and you are 当时, "at that time." Do what fits the situation and it is 应当, what you ought to do. So obviously fitting that no one argues? 当然, of course.

Then let the tone fall to dàng and the fit becomes about things rather than roles: a measure that suits (适当), one thing reckoned as another (当作), or value handed over at the pawnshop counter (上当). Hear level dāng and think role or moment; hear falling dàng and think fit or trade. The tone is the switch between the two halves of the character.
