Xinjiang — officially the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (新疆维吾尔自治区 Xīnjiāng Wéiwú'ěr Zìzhìqū) — is the largest provincial-level administrative division in China at approximately 1.66 million km², larger than any country in Western Europe. The name means "New Territory" or "New Frontier," a Qing dynasty designation given after military reconquest in 1884 when the region was formally incorporated as a province.
The geographic structure is defined by three parallel bands running east-west: mountains, basins, mountains. The 阿尔泰山 (Ā'ěrtài Shān, Altai Mountains) form the northern border with Mongolia and Russia. The 天山 (Tiānshān, "Heavenly Mountains") divide the region through its center — a spine of glaciated peaks rising to over 7,400 meters that separate the northern Junggar Basin from the southern Tarim Basin. The 喀喇昆仑山 (Kālākūnlún Shān, Karakoram) and Kunlun ranges form the southern border with Tibet and Pakistan.
The 塔里木盆地 (Tǎlǐmù Péndì, Tarim Basin) is the largest enclosed basin in China and one of the driest places on earth. At its center lies the 塔克拉玛干沙漠 (Tǎkèlāmǎgān Shāmò, Taklamakan Desert) — the second-largest shifting-sand desert in the world, at roughly 337,000 km². The name is often translated as "you go in, you don't come out," a folk etymology that may not be linguistically accurate but captures the experience of travelers who attempted to cross it before the era of motorized transport and GPS. The Taklamakan is ringed by oasis cities that survive on glacial meltwater descending from the surrounding mountains — Kashgar, Yarkand, Khotan, Kucha, Turpan — and it was these oases that made the Silk Road possible, providing water, food, and shelter to merchants crossing a thousand kilometers of sand.
The northern 准噶尔盆地 (Zhǔngá'ěr Péndì, Junggar Basin) is lower, slightly less arid, and has historically been a zone of nomadic pastoralism — home to the Mongol Dzungar people whose confederation controlled the region until their destruction by the Qing in the eighteenth century. The grasslands of northern Xinjiang support herding economies that have little in common with the oasis agriculture of the south.

The Silk Road · 丝绸之路 Sīchóu zhī Lù
Xinjiang was not a barrier between China and the West — it was the medium through which they communicated. The Silk Road, in its ancient form, passed through Xinjiang along two main routes that skirted the Taklamakan: the northern route running from Dunhuang through Hami, Turpan, Kucha, and Kashgar; the southern route running through Khotan and Yarkand. Both routes converged at Kashgar, from which goods, people, and ideas continued west through the Pamirs into Central Asia, Persia, and eventually the Mediterranean world.
The Silk Road was not primarily a road for silk, and it was not a single road. It was a network of caravan routes linking a chain of oasis cities, each serving as a waystation, market, and cultural exchange point. Merchants rarely traveled its full length — goods changed hands many times, passing from Chinese merchants to Sogdian Central Asian traders to Persian and Arab intermediaries before reaching the Mediterranean. What moved along these routes included not just silk and other luxury goods but Buddhism (transmitted to China from India largely through the Silk Road corridor), Islam (arriving from the west), cotton, glass, paper, printing, gunpowder, and numerous agricultural products in both directions.
The oasis cities of Xinjiang were cultural laboratories as a result. Dunhuang's cave temples, just outside modern Xinjiang at the corridor's eastern end, contain Buddhist art in Chinese, Indian, Tibetan, Sogdian, Uyghur, and Tangut traditions — a physical record of the civilizational mixing that the Silk Road produced. Turpan, in its Turfan Depression (the second-lowest point in China at -154 m below sea level), preserves manuscripts in more than twenty languages and scripts, including texts of Manichean, Nestorian Christian, Buddhist, and early Islamic character. These oasis cities were not provincial backwaters — they were points where the world came together.
Uyghur Culture · 维吾尔文化 Wéiwú'ěr wénhuà
The Uyghurs are a Turkic-speaking people who have been the majority population of the Tarim Basin oasis zone since the ninth century CE, when Uyghur tribes from Mongolia migrated south and west following the collapse of the Uyghur Khaganate. The Uyghur language belongs to the Karluk branch of the Turkic family and is written in a Perso-Arabic script adapted for Uyghur phonology. It is not mutually intelligible with Mandarin Chinese and is phonologically and grammatically a fundamentally different type of language — agglutinative, verb-final, with vowel harmony. Uyghur has a substantial literary tradition including poetry, epic narrative, and historical chronicles.
Islam arrived in the Tarim Basin between the tenth and sixteenth centuries, gradually replacing Buddhism as the religion of the oasis populations. Today the Uyghurs are predominantly Sunni Muslim, and Islamic practice is woven into the architecture, social calendar, diet, and daily life of the southern Xinjiang oasis cities in ways that distinguish them clearly from the Han Chinese interior. The 巴扎 (bāzhā, bazaar) is the center of economic and social life in Kashgar and Khotan — a marketplace tradition with roots in the Central Asian trading culture of the Silk Road era. Kashgar's Id Kah mosque, one of the largest in China, is the focus of Friday prayers and major Islamic festivals.
Uyghur musical culture is highly developed and internationally recognized. The 木卡姆 (Mùkǎmǔ, Muqam) — a suite of twelve major musical modes, each incorporating song, dance, and instrumental performance — was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2005. Uyghur food culture is equally distinctive: lamb is the central protein, prepared as kebabs (烤肉 kǎoròu), 拉条子 (lātiáozi, pulled noodles), and 抓饭 (zhuāfàn, pilaf). The bread (馕 nāng, a flatbread baked in a clay oven) is central to every meal and is sold at bakeries throughout the region. These culinary traditions have spread to Han-majority Chinese cities where Xinjiang restaurants are common.
Historical Incorporation · 历史沿革 lìshǐ yángé
Chinese imperial interest in the region west of the Jade Gate (玉门关 Yùméngguān, the traditional western border of China proper) goes back at least to the Han dynasty. Emperor Wu of Han (r. 141–87 BCE) sent the envoy Zhang Qian westward to seek alliances against the Xiongnu nomadic confederation, opening diplomatic contact with the Central Asian kingdoms and establishing Chinese presence in the region. The Han established the 西域都护府 (Xīyù Dūhùfǔ, "Protectorate of the Western Regions") to administer the Silk Road oasis cities — an administrative relationship that involved tribute, garrison troops, and political protection rather than direct colonial administration of the type familiar from later European empires.
Chinese presence in the region fluctuated dramatically over the following two millennia, retreating when the central state was weak and advancing when it was strong. The Tang dynasty (618–907) had intense engagement with the region, including the Battle of Talas (751 CE) against the Abbasid Caliphate — a Tang defeat that accelerated the spread of Islam into Central Asia and is credited with transmitting papermaking knowledge westward via Chinese prisoners of war. The Ming dynasty (1368–1644) had minimal presence west of the Jiayuguan pass. The Qing dynasty's military campaigns against the Dzungar Mongols in the 1750s and 60s, culminating in what historians have characterized as a near-genocidal destruction of the Dzungar population, brought the region firmly under Qing control. It was formally designated a province in 1884 under the name Xinjiang.
After the fall of the Qing, the region experienced decades of warlord rule and two short-lived East Turkestan Republics (1933–34 and 1944–49) before the People's Liberation Army took control in 1949. Xinjiang was designated an Autonomous Region in 1955.
Xinjiang Today · 当代新疆 dāngdài Xīnjiāng
Xinjiang today is a region of enormous economic resource and intense political complexity. It holds approximately 22% of China's proven coal reserves, significant oil and natural gas deposits, and is the source of the majority of China's cotton. The 西部大开发 (Xībù Dà Kāifā, "Develop the West" campaign) launched in 1999 brought massive infrastructure investment — highways, railways, pipelines, and the telecommunications network — and has accelerated the migration of Han Chinese workers and settlers to a region that was previously predominantly non-Han in its southern areas.
The contemporary governance of Xinjiang is a subject of international controversy. The Chinese government describes its policies as counterterrorism and vocational training measures responding to a wave of attacks by Uyghur separatists in the 2010s. Critics, including governments, journalists, and human rights organizations in the West, have documented extensive restrictions on religious practice, mass surveillance infrastructure, and the detention of large numbers of Uyghurs in facilities the government has called vocational education centers. The situation has produced significant diplomatic friction between China and Western governments, and the question of what is happening in Xinjiang — and how to characterize it — remains contested at every level.
What is not contested is that Xinjiang is undergoing rapid and profound change: demographically, economically, and culturally. The Uyghur population remains large — approximately 11 million in a total regional population of around 26 million — and Uyghur language, culture, and Islamic practice continue. But the terms on which they continue, and who controls those terms, is the central question of contemporary Xinjiang's trajectory.

The Uyghur people — the Turkic-speaking Muslim majority population of the Tarim Basin oasis cities, one of China's fifty-five recognized ethnic minorities. The word Uyghur (维吾尔) is a transliteration of the Turkic name for the people, meaning roughly "united" or "allied."
Kashgar — the westernmost major city in China, situated at the edge of the Tarim Basin near the Kyrgyz and Tajik borders. Historically the greatest bazaar city on the Silk Road, where the northern and southern routes reconverged. The old city (老城 lǎochéng) retains much of its traditional character.

Naan bread — the staple flatbread of Uyghur cuisine, baked in a clay tandoor oven (馕坑 nāngkēng). Sold fresh throughout southern Xinjiang and available across China at Xinjiang restaurants. A cultural marker and the center of the daily Uyghur table.
The Heavenly Mountains — the mountain range dividing northern and southern Xinjiang, with peaks reaching 7,443 m. A UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, the Tianshan is the water source for the oasis cities of the Tarim Basin and one of the great mountain ranges of Central Asia.
