比较

bǐjiào

To compare — and to qualify. 比较 functions as both a verb (comparing two things) and an adverb (softening a claim: "fairly," "relatively," "rather"). Mastering both uses unlocks a key dimension of natural Mandarin.

字源zìyuánEtymology — and 较 Unpacked
字源洞见 zìyuán dòngjiàn · Etymological Insight

— two people standing side by side (the oracle bone form shows two matching human figures). The original meaning: to stand next to, to be aligned, to compare. Extended meanings: ratio (比例), for example (比如), score (比分). The side-by-side posture gives the character its core sense: comparison requires proximity.

较 jiào — 车 chē (chariot) + 交 jiāo (to cross; to intersect). Originally referred to the axle or hitch of a chariot — things that cross and connect. Extended to: to compare, to contend, to calculate. Together, 比较 = to stand beside and measure — comparison as both physical proximity and calculated difference.

副词用法fùcí yòngfǎ比较 as Adverb — Relatively, Fairly, Rather
辨析 biànxī · The Adverb Use

When 比较 precedes an adjective or verb without a second term being compared, it functions as a degree adverb meaning "relatively," "fairly," or "rather." This is the more frequent everyday use. It hedges: instead of claiming something is simply (good), saying 比较好 signals "good relative to expectations" or "good enough" — a characteristic Chinese tendency to qualify rather than assert.

This hedging quality makes 比较 socially important. 这个比较难 (this is fairly difficult) is softer than 这个很难 (this is very difficult) — it leaves room for the listener to disagree or for the speaker to revise. Overusing absolutes (很/非常/极其) can sound blunt; 比较 provides a natural cushion.

Pattern 句型
比较 + adjective = "fairly [adjective]." No comparison partner needed. 比较好 = fairly good / relatively good. 比较难 = rather difficult. 比较贵 = somewhat expensive. The hedging tone is always present — it implies "compared to some baseline" even when that baseline is unstated.
