yòu / zài 再 · again, twice over

Chinese has two agains: 又 looks backward at a repetition that happened, 再 looks forward to one still to come. 再见 is the proof.

再见的语法 · The Grammar Inside Goodbye

English "again" is tenseless, so learners must acquire a distinction their instincts don't flag: Chinese splits repetition by whether it is realized. reports a repeat that has entered the record, and pairs naturally with : 又忘了 (forgot again), 猫又跑了 (the cat escaped again). projects a repeat into the unrealized future, and pairs with invitations, plans, and imperatives: 再吃一点 (have a bit more), 有空再来 (come again when you're free). The everyday word that teaches the rule is 再见, "again-see": the meeting is yet to come, so the again must be 再. Nobody says 又见 as a farewell; the language would hear it as "we met again," a report rather than a wish.

再 also carries a sequencing sense that barely registers as "again": 先…再… orders events (先洗手再吃饭, wash your hands, then eat), and 再说 tacked onto a refusal means "we'll see later," the polite Chinese for probably never. In negatives, 再 yields 不再 (no longer, formal: 他不再是孩子了) and 别再…了 (stop doing that: 别再玩手机了!), the parental frame par excellence.

语气与特例 yǔqì yǔ tèlì Tone and Special Cases
又要开会了 · The Sigh Inside 又

又 carries an emotional payload lacks: because it reports a repetition, it invites an attitude toward the pattern, usually weariness. 又下雨了 is a sigh; 又是周一 is the Monday groan; 你又来了 ("there you go again") dismisses a familiar argument. This tonal weight powers the one exception every textbook stars: 又要… applies 又 to a future event when the repetition is certain and, typically, unwelcome: 明天又要开会了 ("another meeting tomorrow," the doom already booked in the calendar). The future belongs to , but a future you can see coming like weather gets 又, resignation overriding the timeline.

The mirror-image special case: past repetition that failed to happen takes 没再 (didn't again): 他走了以后没再回来 (after he left he never came back). And in questions about desire, quietly competes with both (你还要吗? want more?), a three-way contrast the guide's 还 page continues.

又高又帅 · Stacking Qualities

The frame 又…又… stacks two (or more) qualities that hold at once: 又便宜又好吃 (cheap and tasty), 又累又饿 (exhausted and starving), 房子又大又亮 (the apartment is big and bright). It implies the combination is worth remarking, which is why compliments and complaints both love it. Its cousin 一边…一边… stacks simultaneous actions rather than qualities (一边走一边聊, chatting while walking), and … stacks escalation (越来越, better and better); the three frames together cover most of the "both/while/increasingly" territory, and each has its own page in this guide.

Formal repetition doubles the morphemes: 一再 and 再三 both mean "repeatedly, again and again," at home in official prose (一再强调, repeatedly emphasized; 再三感谢, thanked profusely). And 再 grades adjectives in bargaining and coaxing: 再便宜一点 (a little cheaper still), 再大一号 (one size up), the customer's litany in every market covered by this guide's bargaining pages.

常见问题chángjiàn wèntíFrequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between 又 (yòu) and 再 (zài)?
Both mean again, split by time. 又 marks repetition that has already happened: 他又迟到了 (he was late again). 再 marks repetition still to come: 再来一次 (once more), 明天再说 (we'll talk again tomorrow). Realized: 又. Unrealized: 再.
Why does 再见 (zàijiàn) mean goodbye?
It is literally 'again see': see you again, meeting still to come, which is why it takes the forward-looking 再. The same logic builds 再来 (come again), the restaurant's parting hope.
What does 又…又… mean?
The both-and frame for stacking qualities: 又便宜又好吃 (both cheap and tasty), 又高又帅 (tall and handsome). Each 又 introduces one quality, and the frame implies the combination is notable.
