尝试与结果 chángshì yǔ jiéguǒ Attempt versus Outcome
找了半天,没找到 · Looked All Day, Didn't Find It

English verbs quietly bundle outcomes: "find" means your search succeeded, "see" means light reached your understanding. Chinese unbundles them. The bare verb names the activity, and a 结果补语 (resultative complement), welded on directly after, names what came of it. 找 (zhǎo) is to search; 找到 (zhǎodào) is to search-and-attain: to find. is to listen; 听见 is to hear; 听懂 is to understand what you heard. The sentence 我找了半天,可是没找到 ("I looked for ages but didn't find it") is impossible to translate word-for-word into English precisely because English cannot say "find" without the success built in.

This is the grammatical machine behind pairs a learner otherwise memorizes blindly: (look) versus 看见 (see), (study) versus 学会 (master), 买 (shop for) versus 买到 (get one's hands on). The complement slot takes verbs (, , ) and adjectives (, , 干净) alike, and the two syllables behave as one verb: aspect follows the whole unit (吃完了饭), never splits it.

补语的性格 · Each Complement's Personality

A dozen complements do most of the work, and each has a personality worth knowing. is pure completion and combines with almost anything consumable or performable. marks attainment of a target and also extends to reaching places and times (走到学校, walk as far as school; 等到十点, wait until ten). is perception registering, which is why 看见 and 听见 pair with the senses. means the action reached a satisfactory, usable state: 饭做好了 announces dinner is ready, and a parent's 坐好! orders the wriggling child into proper position. and its opposite grade the outcome: 猜对了 (guessed right). Two more earn early adoption: (mastery: 学会游泳, learn to swim, as opposed to merely studying it) and (apart/open: 打开 open up, 分开 separate).

否定与把字句 fǒudìng yǔ bǎzìjù Negation, and Where Fits
没 + 动结 · The Result That Didn't Happen

Because a result either obtained or it did not, negation uses 没 (the realized-action negator) before the whole verb-result unit: 我没听懂 (I didn't understand), 作业还没做完 (the homework isn't finished yet). Putting there is the classic learner error; belongs to habitual or hypothetical statements and, crucially, to the potential form (听不懂, "unable to understand"), which this guide treats on its own page. The near-minimal pair is worth staring at once: 没听懂 reports a failure that happened; 听不懂 reports an inability.

Resultatives also explain why the construction exists. 把 fronts the object so the verb-plus-result can land on it as a verdict: 把作业做完 (get the homework done), 把门关好 (shut the door properly), 把字写错了 (wrote the character wrong). A 把 sentence without some complement or other elaboration after the verb feels amputated to native ears, and the resultative is the most common thing that fills the slot; the two patterns are roommates, and this guide's 把 page holds the lease.

词汇 cíhuì Pairs Worth Memorizing
找到 zhǎodào to find
V+结果 dòngjié
Search + attain. The pair that teaches the whole system: 找工作 is job-hunting, 找到工作 is being hired, and the difference is one syllable of outcome.
钥匙找了一个小时,终于找到了。
Yàoshi zhǎo le yí gè xiǎoshí, zhōngyú zhǎodào le.
I looked for the keys for an hour and finally found them.
听懂 tīngdǒng to understand (by listening)
V+结果 dòngjié
Listen + comprehend: the learner's daily scorecard. Its reading twin is 看懂, and the honest classroom report combines them: 我听了,没听懂。I listened; it didn't land.
老师说的话你都听懂了吗?
Lǎoshī shuō de huà nǐ dōu tīngdǒng le ma?
Did you understand everything the teacher said?
学会 xuéhuì to master, to learn (successfully)
V+结果 dòngjié
Study + acquire-the-skill. 学了三年 states duration; 学会了 states victory. The complement 会 restricts itself to learnable skills, which is a nice grammatical definition of what a skill is.

Tā wǔ suì jiù xuéhuì le qí zìxíngchē.
He learned to ride a bicycle at just five years old.
准备好 zhǔnbèi hǎo to be ready

Prepare + brought-to-good-state. 准备好了吗? ("ready?") starts every race, road trip, and presentation in the language. The reply 好了 borrows the complement alone, an answer made of pure result.
大家都准备好了,我们出发吧。
Dàjiā dōu zhǔnbèi hǎo le, wǒmen chūfā ba.
Everyone's ready; let's set off.

常见问题chángjiàn wèntíFrequently Asked Questions
What is a resultative complement in Chinese?
A second element glued onto a verb to state the action's outcome: 听 is to listen, 听懂 is to listen and understand; 找 is to look for, 找到 is to find. The verb names the attempt, the complement names the result, and many English verbs (find, see, finish) translate as verb-plus-complement pairs.
How do you negate a resultative complement?
With 没 before the whole unit: 我没听懂 (I didn't understand). 不 appears only in hypotheticals and the potential form (听不懂). Since the result either happened or it didn't, the completed-action negator 没 does the work.
What are the most common resultative complements?
完 (finished: 吃完 eat up), 到 (attained: 找到 find, 买到 manage to buy), 见 (perceived: 看见 see, 听见 hear), 懂 (understood: 看懂), 好 (done properly: 准备好 ready), and 错 (wrongly: 说错 misspeak). A dozen complements cover most daily speech.
