工厂 (gōngchǎng) is "work shed." The simplified form 厂 reuses an ancient character for a cliff overhang, a shelter with one wall; the traditional form is 廠. On the floor people say 厂里 (chǎng lǐ, "in the factory") and 厂家 (chǎngjiā) for the manufacturer as a business. The vocabulary below is the dialect of that world, much of it unknown to Chinese speakers outside manufacturing: 大货 for the bulk order, 丝 for a hundredth of a millimetre, 唛头 for a carton's shipping mark. Textbook business Chinese skips all of it, and it is what your merchandiser will write in every WeChat message.
The sequence matters more than any single word. Each stage ends with a 确认 (confirmation), and each confirmation is the reference for the next stage: the approved sample is the standard for the mold, the sealed sample is the standard for bulk, and bulk is inspected against the sealed sample. Disputes later turn on which sample was confirmed, when, and by whom, so learn the stage names well enough to use them in a sentence.
样品yàngpǐnSamples
打样dǎyàngto make a sample; sampling
The verb for producing samples before an order. 打样费 (dǎyàngfèi) is the sampling fee, often refunded against the first order; 打样周期 is how long sampling takes.
About how many days does sampling take? Can the sampling fee be deducted from the bulk order?
确认样quèrènyàngapproval sample
The sample the buyer has approved, usually signed and dated. Everything after it is measured against it, so record exactly which version you approved and what you asked to change.
We've approved the colour, but the lid still needs changes, so this doesn't count as the approval sample.
封样fēngyàngsealed sample; golden sample
"Seal the sample": approved units are labelled, signed by both sides, and kept by each as the binding quality standard for bulk. Also called 标准样 (biāozhǔnyàng) or 金样 (jīnyàng, golden sample). Keep at least one yourself.
封样一式三份,我们带走一份,你们留两份。
Fēngyàng yí shì sān fèn, wǒmen dàizǒu yí fèn, nǐmen liú liǎng fèn.
Three sealed samples: we take one with us, you keep two.
Bulk production must match the sealed sample; colour and feel must both be consistent.
产前样chǎnqiányàngpre-production sample (PPS)
Made on the production line with production materials, after tooling and before bulk starts. Hand samples can be perfect while line samples are not; insisting on a 产前样 catches the difference before thousands of units exist.
Before bulk production starts, please send us five pre-production samples to approve.
模具mújùMolds and Tooling
谁的模具 shéi de mújù · Who Owns the Mold
模具 (mújù) covers every custom tool: injection molds, stamping dies, fixtures. 开模 (kāimú, "open a mold") is the act of commissioning one and is often the largest single cost in a new product. The question that matters most is not the price but the ownership: 模具归谁 (mújù guī shéi, "who does the mold belong to?"). A buyer who pays the 模具费 normally owns the tool, but unless the contract says so, and says the factory may not use it for anyone else, the factory holds it physically and can make your part for others. Ask the question in the meeting, then get the answer into the contract; the contract and IP page in this series covers the clauses.
开模kāimúto make a mold; to commission tooling
The step that commits real money. 开新模 is new tooling; 共模 (gòngmú) or 公模 (gōngmú) is a shared or public mold the factory already owns, cheaper but not exclusive to you. 私模 (sīmú) is a private mold for one customer.
这个盖子要开新模还是可以用你们的公模?
Zhège gàizi yào kāi xīn mú háishi kěyǐ yòng nǐmen de gōngmú?
Does this lid need a new mold, or can you use one of your existing open molds?
How long from starting the mold to the first samples?
模具费mújùfèitooling fee
The one-off charge for the mold. Common arrangements: paid in full up front, split 50/50 with the balance at sample approval, or refunded (返还 fǎnhuán) once order volume passes an agreed number.
Once cumulative orders reach 50,000 units, can the tooling fee be refunded?
试模shìmúmold trial; first shots
Running the new tool for the first time. Rounds are numbered T1, T2, T3, said as letters plus Chinese numbers (T一, T二). Each round produces parts to measure; the goal is to stop modifying.
T1试模的样品下周能寄出来吗?
T-yī shìmú de yàngpǐn xià zhōu néng jì chūlái ma?
Can the T1 trial samples be sent out next week?
改模gǎimúto modify a mold
Changing the tool after a trial. The crucial question is who pays: changes caused by the factory's error are on them, changes caused by a new request from you are on you. Agree which is which in writing before work starts. 修模 (xiūmú) is repair or maintenance.
This modification is due to your error, so the cost should be yours.
图纸túzhǐDrawings and Tolerances

图纸túzhǐtechnical drawing
2D drawings with dimensions; 3D文件 or 3D图 (sān-D tú) for the model file, usually STEP. 以图纸为准 ("the drawing governs") is the sentence that settles arguments, so make sure the drawing is the latest version.
请以最新版本的图纸为准,旧的作废。
Qǐng yǐ zuì xīn bǎnběn de túzhǐ wéi zhǔn, jiù de zuòfèi.
Please work from the latest drawing; the old versions are void.
公差gōngchātolerance
The allowed deviation from a dimension. Tight tolerances cost money; for parts that thread or seal against each other they decide whether the product works. 超差 (chāochā) is out of tolerance.
Can the wall be made a little thinner? It's too heavy right now.
材质cáizhìMaterials and Processes
三零四和三一六 sān líng sì hé sān yī liù · Saying the Grade
Steel grades are read digit by digit: 304 is 三零四 (sān líng sì), 316 is 三一六 (sān yī liù), and 316L adds the letter. 不锈钢 (bùxiùgāng) is "steel that does not rust." 食品级 (shípǐnjí, food grade) is the claim every supplier makes, so ask for the 材质报告 (cáizhì bàogào, material certificate) or a third-party test report rather than accepting the word. A vacuum bottle has an inner liner, 内胆 (nèidǎn, literally "inner gallbladder"), and an outer shell, 外壳 (wàiké); specify the grade for each separately, because a factory can meet "316" on the liner and use 304 or something cheaper on the shell.
不锈钢bùxiùgāngstainless steel
Grades by number: 201 is cheaper and less corrosion-resistant, 304 is the common food-contact grade, 316 adds molybdenum for better resistance to acids and salt. 材质 (cáizhì) is "material" in the sense of grade and composition.
316 for the inner liner, 304 for the outer shell, with a material certificate for every batch.
真空保温zhēnkōng bǎowēnvacuum insulation
Double-wall insulation: the air between liner and shell is pumped out, 抽真空 (chōu zhēnkōng). 保温 is keeping warm, 保冷 keeping cold; 保温测试 is the thermal retention test, and 保温效果 the result.
Bǎowēn cèshì de tiáojiàn shì shénme? Zhuāng duōshao dù de shuǐ, cè jǐ ge xiǎoshí?
What are the thermal test conditions? Water at what temperature, measured over how many hours?
高硼硅玻璃gāopéngguī bōliborosilicate glass
"High boron-silicon glass," resistant to thermal shock. 耐热 (nàirè) is heat-resistant, 温差 (wēnchā) the temperature difference it can survive, 爆裂 (bàoliè) bursting or shattering.
What temperature difference can this glass take? Is there a thermal shock test?
硅胶圈guījiāo quānsilicone seal ring
硅胶 (guījiāo) is silicone; 密封圈 (mìfēngquān) is any sealing ring or gasket. Food-grade silicone should not smell; 异味 (yìwèi, an odd smell) and 发黄 (fāhuáng, yellowing) are the common complaints. 漏水 (lòushuǐ) is a leak.
Inspection before shipment, by your own staff or a 第三方 (dì-sān fāng, third party). 抽检 (chōujiǎn) is sampling inspection, usually by AQL level; 全检 (quánjiǎn) is 100% inspection. 来料检验 checks incoming materials.
If the inspection fails, the goods are reworked and re-inspected at your cost.
不良率bùliánglǜdefect rate
Percentage of defective units; 良品率 or 良率 (liánglǜ) is the yield, its complement. 不良品 (bùliángpǐn) and 次品 (cìpǐn) are defective goods. Agree an acceptable rate in the contract and what happens above it.
If the defect rate exceeds 1%, you replace the excess at your cost.
返工fǎngōngrework
Fixing defective goods. Its harder cousins: 报废 (bàofèi) scrapping, 补货 (bǔhuò) replacing goods, 退货 (tuìhuò) returning them. 整改 (zhěnggǎi) is a corrective action on the process itself, so the defect stops recurring.
Rework only treats the symptom; we need a corrective action report explaining the cause and the measures.
检测报告jiǎncè bàogàotest report
From a lab, often for a named standard: LFGB, FDA, and the like are said as letters. 认证 (rènzhèng) is certification, 证书 (zhèngshū) the certificate. Check the report's date and which material it covers.
"Order-starting quantity," often per colour or per SKU rather than per order. Ask which. Factories will usually trade a lower MOQ for a higher unit price.
Qǐdìngliàng shì měi ge yánsè sānqiān, háishi zǒnggòng sānqiān?
Is the MOQ 3,000 per colour, or 3,000 in total?
交期jiāoqīlead time, delivery date
Also 货期 (huòqī). Ask when the clock starts: from deposit received, from sample approval, or from materials arriving. 延期 (yánqī) is a delay; 赶货 (gǎnhuò) is rushing an order.
Does the lead time start from receipt of the deposit or from sample approval?
产能chǎnnéngproduction capacity
Output per day or month. 排产 (páichǎn) is scheduling an order onto the line; 旺季 (wàngjì) is peak season, when capacity disappears. In the months before Chinese New Year lines fill up and many workers leave early, so lead times stretch.
Can it ship before Chinese New Year, or will it wait until after?
包装bāozhuāngpackaging
彩盒 (cǎihé) is the retail colour box, 内盒 the inner box, 外箱 (wàixiāng) the master carton, 装箱数 the units per carton. 唛头 (màitóu), from English "mark," is the shipping mark printed on cartons. 跌落测试 (diēluò cèshì) is the drop test.
The master cartons must pass a drop test, and the shipping marks must be printed from our file.
大货dàhuòbulk goods, the production run
Floor slang for the main order as opposed to samples. 大货生产 is bulk production, 大货样 a unit pulled from it. The word appears in nearly every merchandiser message: 大货已经上线了 means your order is on the line.
When does bulk go on the line? Once it does, please send me a few photos.
出货 chūhuò · Out the Door
出货 (chūhuò) is the last word of the sequence and the moment leverage changes hands. Before shipment the factory wants your balance payment and you hold it; after shipment the goods are in a container and the factory holds the money. That is why inspection happens before 出货, why the balance is usually due against the inspection report or the bill of lading (提单 tídān), and why a buyer's most useful sentence in the final week is 验货通过以后再付尾款 (yànhuò tōngguò yǐhòu zài fù wěikuǎn): the balance is paid after inspection passes. The price, payment, and contract pages in this series pick up from there.
