字源 zìyuán Etymology & Structure

门 mén is a pictograph of a two-leaf gate. The traditional form 門 shows it plainly: two door-panels hung side by side, each with its post and pivot, the kind of double door that closed the entrance to a courtyard or a city ward. The simplified 门 keeps one stylized leaf with its hinge. Either way the glyph is the gate, and 门 serves as a radical in a whole family of door-and-enclosure characters: jiān (the space within a gate), wèn (to ask, mouth at the gate), 闭 bì (to shut).

From the swinging doors, four senses open out:

1. Door, gate, entrance. The literal opening: 门口 ménkǒu (doorway), 大门 dàmén (the main gate), 出门 chūmén (to go out).
2. Family, house, school. Who lives or studies behind the door: 家门 jiāmén (one's family), and by extension a lineage or a master's following.
3. Division, category, field. A doorway into a body of knowledge or work: 部门 bùmén (department), 专门 zhuānmén (specialized), 入门 rùmén (to get started, "enter the door").
4. A measure word. For things grasped as whole units entered through a doorway: 一门课 yì mén kè (a course of study), 一门技术 (a skill), 一门大炮 (a cannon).

The thread is the threshold. A gate is the point where inside meets outside, and so 门 marks every kind of entry: into a building, into a family, into a trade, into a discipline. To learn the basics of anything is 入门, to step through its door.

专门 zhuānmén Field & Specialty
语义洞见 yǔyì dòngjiàn · Semantic Insight

A body of knowledge or skill is imagined in Chinese as a building you enter through a door, and 门 carries that metaphor. To begin learning a subject is 入门 rùmén, literally "to enter the door": a 入门教程 is a beginner's tutorial. To devote yourself to one field is 专门 zhuānmén, "specialized," concentrating on a single doorway rather than wandering many. And each whole discipline can be counted with 门 as its measure word: 一门科学 "a science," 一门外语 "a foreign language," 一门手艺 "a craft."

The image is worth holding onto, because it shapes how Chinese talks about expertise. Mastery is not a flat accumulation of facts but a series of thresholds crossed. You stand outside a field, you 入门 across its doorstep, and only then do you begin to move through its rooms.

See the two leaves of a gate swinging on their posts. That is the whole character, and every meaning is something passing through it. Step through and you are at the doorway (门口), heading out (出门) or opening up for the day (开门). The people behind the gate are the household and, by extension, a division of an organization (部门).

Then make the gate the entrance to a body of knowledge. To learn the basics is to 入门, to cross its threshold; to specialize is 专门, to commit to one doorway; and each whole discipline is counted as 一门, one door entered. Wherever inside meets outside, 门 is the point of passage.
