声 shēng began as a picture of a sound being made and heard. The full traditional form is 聲, which gathers three things: 殸 (a hanging chime-stone struck by a hand holding a mallet), 耳 (ěr, an ear) below it, and the sound that travels between them. The chime is sounded, the ear receives it, and the character names exactly that event: a sound produced and perceived. It is the classic way Chinese builds an abstract idea, by drawing the concrete scene that contains it.
The simplified 声 keeps only the upper-left corner of 殸, dropping both the ear and the striking hand. What survives looks like 士 (shì) over a few strokes, which is why the modern dictionary radical is 士. The radical here is a matter of stroke shape, not meaning: nothing about a scholar lives inside the word for sound. When you meet 声, read the whole traditional 聲 behind it, the struck chime and the listening ear, and the modern senses fall into place.
Three senses branch from the struck chime:
1. Sound, voice, noise. The literal hearing: 声音 shēngyīn (sound), 大声 dàshēng (loud), 小声 xiǎoshēng (quiet, softly), 笑声 xiàoshēng (the sound of laughter).
2. Tone of the voice. The pitch a syllable is spoken on: 声调 shēngdiào (tone), 四声 sìshēng (the four tones of Mandarin), 第一声 dì-yī shēng (the first tone).
3. To make known, reputation. What is sounded out to the world: 声明 shēngmíng (to declare; a statement), 名声 míngshēng (reputation), 声誉 shēngyù (prestige).
The thread is the sound that leaves a source and reaches others. Whether it is a chime, a laugh, the pitch of a word, or a name carried on the air, 声 is something sounded out and received.
声 as the tone of a word → 声调 tone · 四声 the four tones · 轻声 neutral tone · 声母 initial consonant
声 as making known / reputation → 声明 to declare · 名声 reputation · 声誉 prestige · 呼声 a public call
Mandarin is a tonal language: the pitch contour a syllable is spoken on is part of the word, not decoration. 声 is the character that names this. 声调 shēngdiào is "tone," literally the sound's pitch-shape, and 四声 sìshēng is the set of four: 第一声 high and level, 第二声 rising, 第三声 dipping then rising, 第四声 falling. A fifth, the toneless 轻声 qīngshēng (neutral tone), is short and unstressed. Change the tone and you change the word: 妈 mā (mother), 麻 má (hemp), 马 mǎ (horse), 骂 mà (to scold).
声 also names the consonant that opens a syllable. 声母 shēngmǔ is the "initial," the onset consonant such as the b in bā, paired with the 韵母 yùnmǔ, the "final" that carries the vowel and tone. So 声 sits at the heart of how a Chinese syllable is described: an initial 声母, a final, and a tone 声调 riding over the whole.
A sound that travels far enough becomes a name. From the literal "sound" 声 extends to mean what is sounded out about a person or a position: a declaration, and the reputation that lingers after it. 声明 shēngmíng is to state something openly, to put it on record; the same two characters as a noun mean an official statement. 名声 míngshēng is the reputation a person carries, the sound of their name in others' mouths, which can be good 好名声 or bad 坏名声.
The wider family keeps this sense of a voice raised in public. 声誉 shēngyù is prestige or standing; 呼声 hūshēng is a public call or clamor for something; 声援 shēngyuán is to back a cause with one's voice, to give vocal support. In every case 声 is no longer the bare sound but the sound aimed outward, meant to be heard and to leave a mark.
Picture the full traditional 聲: a hand lifts a mallet and strikes a hanging chime-stone, and just below sits an ear, catching the ring. That single scene, a sound made and a sound heard, is the whole character. The simplified 声 is only the top corner of that chime left standing, with the ear and the mallet worn away, so when you see it, restore the chime and the ear in your mind.
From that ring, follow the sound outward. Close up it is a plain noise or voice (声音, 大声). Shaped into pitch it becomes the tone of a word (声调, 四声). Carried far enough on the air it becomes a name in the world, a declaration or a reputation (声明, 名声). Whenever you meet 声, ask how far the sound is traveling, and you will know which sense is ringing.
