字源zìyuánEtymology & Structure
字源洞见 zìyuán dòngjiàn · Etymological Insight
改 = 己 + 攵. On the left, 己 (jǐ) sits as a small kneeling figure; on the right, 攵 is the old picture of a hand gripping a stick, the same striking element that drives 教 (to teach) and 政 (to govern). The character is a scene, not a sound-spelling: a raised rod comes down over a crouching child, and the child is made to be different than it was. The 攵 side is semantic, the action of forcing; the 己 side is semantic too, the small body that the action lands on.
The seal form keeps both parts clear, the bent kneeling shape on the left and the hand-and-rod on the right. From this disciplinary image the Shuōwén Jiězì reads 改 as 更也, to make over, to renew. The path from concrete to abstract is short here. A blow that reshapes a child becomes any deliberate act that reshapes a thing: a draft, a habit, a law, a route.
That origin still tilts the modern word. 改 is rarely passive drift. It carries an agent and an intention, often the sense of fixing what was wrong rather than merely swapping one state for another. To 改 a sentence is to correct it; to 改 a habit is to break and remake it; to 改 a name is to choose a new one on purpose. The stick is gone from daily speech, but the force of correction it implied is still inside the glyph.
Japanese carries 改 as かい / あらた-める (kai / aratameru), as in 改正 (kaisei, revision) and 改札 (kaisatsu, the ticket gate where a stub is altered). Korean reads it 개 (gae), in 개혁 (gaehyeok, reform) and 개정 (gaejeong, amendment). Across all three the word leans the same way, toward correcting and reforming rather than idle change.

记忆法 jìyìfǎ · Master Retention Image
Picture a small child, 己, kneeling on a packed-earth floor, head bowed over a writing slate. Behind the child stands a teacher whose right hand grips a thin bamboo rod, 攵, raised and ready. The rod taps once on the slate, the child rubs out the crooked stroke and draws it straight. That single corrective tap is 改: not the child changing on a whim, but a hand reaching in to set the line right.
Hold the two halves apart and the glyph reads itself. The 己 on the left is the thing being worked on, the draft, the habit, the mistake. The 攵 on the right is the hand that comes down to fix it. Wherever 改 appears, look for that hand and that intention. 改正 sets a wrong stroke straight, 修改 goes over the whole essay rod in hand, 改革 brings the rod down on an entire institution and remakes it like hide tanned into leather.
Keep the rod always pointed at a flaw. That is why 改天 feels gentle but 改革 feels heavy: both are the same correcting hand, one resetting a coffee date, the other resetting a country.
