The four-character phrase 礼尚往来 (lǐ shàng wǎng lái) — "propriety values going and coming," or more freely, "courtesy demands reciprocity" — is the foundational principle of Chinese gift culture. It appears in the Record of Rites 礼记 (Lǐjì), one of the Five Confucian Classics, and has been in active social circulation for roughly two thousand years. The principle is direct: giving creates an obligation to receive, and receiving creates an obligation to give in return. Gift exchange is not sentiment dressed up in social form — it is the mechanism by which relationships are built, maintained, and repaired.

The connection to 关系 (guānxi, relationships/connections) is structural. Guānxi is not merely friendship or familiarity — it is a network of mutual obligation, the sum of favors given and received, the accumulated credit of years of appropriate behavior. Gift-giving is one of the primary tools for establishing guānxi with someone new and for servicing guānxi with existing relationships. Failing to give at an appropriate moment — a significant birthday, a holiday, a hospitalization, a job promotion — is not simply an oversight: it signals indifference or disrespect, and the relationship will register the absence.

The social ledger operates across time and with long memory. A family that was given a generous wedding gift will remember the amount and reciprocate proportionally when the giver's children marry — often decades later. An employee who brings a gift to a supervisor at the Spring Festival is investing in a relationship that may yield practical returns throughout the year. The gift is not a bribe in the moral sense, and the Chinese participants in this system would bristle at that framing — it is simply the honest acknowledgment that relationships require tending, and that tending them has a material dimension.

Cash in red envelopes (红包 hóngbāo) is the most flexible and widely acceptable gift for life events: weddings, births, children's birthdays, and major holidays. The red envelope signals good fortune, and cash removes all risk of giving something unwanted. The amount should be even (pairs are lucky), should avoid the number four, and should be calibrated to the relationship. For digital transfers via WeChat Pay, the red envelope format persists even in purely electronic form — the platform preserves the ritual container even when the paper is gone.

Tea (.html">茶 chá) is a perennially safe gift across all contexts: it is consumable (no clutter), implies cultural refinement, varies enormously in quality and price (allowing precise calibration to the relationship), and carries no bad symbolic associations. Pu-erh tea (普洱茶 pǔ'ěr chá) ages well and can be given in compressed cake form, which is easy to store and has a certain gravitas. Good tea, especially aged or rare varieties, can carry a price tag that signals serious respect without the awkwardness of giving cash directly in non-cash contexts.

Baijiu (白酒), Chinese grain spirits, is a standard business gift, particularly in northern China. The bottle communicates clearly: its brand signals the giver's knowledge of the recipient's tastes, and high-end brands (Moutai 茅台, Wuliangye 五粮液) are effectively currencies in themselves. A bottle of Moutai is understood to represent a certain monetary value and a certain level of seriousness. For recipients who do not drink, the bottle retains its value as a re-giftable item — and everyone knows this. Fruit baskets are appropriate for hospital visits; the fruit should be in season, plentiful, and visually impressive.

Gifts are presented and received with both hands. This is not merely politeness — it is a deliberate signal that the exchange commands your full attention and respect. Handing something with one hand, especially with the left hand or while doing something else, reads as dismissive. The same two-hand convention applies to business cards, formal documents, and any item being offered in a context of respect. The hands should be clean and the gesture unhurried. Receiving a gift one-handed while looking away is a minor but noticed social failure.

Chinese gift-giving practice typically does not involve opening the gift in front of the giver. Where Western etiquette treats immediate opening as a demonstration of enthusiasm and gratitude, Chinese convention understands it differently: opening a gift in front of the giver can appear greedy, and can put the recipient in the uncomfortable position of reacting honestly to something they may not want. Setting the gift aside to be opened later spares both parties the performance of spontaneous delight. The giver's generosity is already acknowledged by the receipt and the verbal thanks; the gift's contents are secondary. Foreigners sometimes read this as coldness — it is the opposite, a form of mutual protection of face.

In business contexts, gift-giving has a parallel function and a somewhat different set of constraints. Corporate anti-corruption policies — both Chinese government regulations following the 2012 anti-graft campaign and the policies of multinational companies — have significantly restricted the category of acceptable business gifts. Extravagant gifts to officials or to employees of other companies can constitute bribery under Chinese law. As a result, business gift-giving has in many contexts migrated toward items of modest declared value: specialty food items, tea, branded corporate merchandise, or local specialties. The relational logic has not changed, but the expression of it has become more careful.

A hand gift — a gift brought in hand when visiting someone, the material expression of having thought of the host.
