Chinese kinship terminology is one of the most elaborate systems in any major language. Where English uses generic terms — "uncle," "aunt," "cousin" — that cover multiple distinct relationships, Chinese assigns a separate term to virtually every position in the family network: your mother's older brother is 舅舅 (jiùjiu), your mother's younger brother is also 舅舅, but your father's older brother is 伯伯 (bóbo) and your father's younger brother is 叔叔 (shūshu). These are not interchangeable. Using the wrong term signals that you do not know your own family structure, which in Chinese social life is mildly embarrassing.
The system is organized along several axes simultaneously: paternal versus maternal line, older versus younger than the reference parent, male versus female, and generation above or below. On the paternal side alone: 爷爷 (yéye) for grandfather, 奶奶 (nǎinai) for grandmother, 伯伯 (bóbo) for father's older brother, 叔叔 (shūshu) for father's younger brother, 姑姑 (gūgu) for father's sister. On the maternal side: 外公 (wàigōng) for maternal grandfather, 外婆 (wàipó) for maternal grandmother, 舅舅 (jiùjiu) for mother's brother, 姨妈 (yímā) for mother's older sister, 姨 (yí) for mother's younger sister. The prefix 外 (wài, "outside" or "external") marks the maternal line, reflecting the patrilineal bias of traditional Chinese kinship: your mother's family is on the "outside" of your own family in the classical Confucian framework.
Cousins present perhaps the most elaborate sub-system. English "cousin" covers eight distinct Chinese terms, each specifying whether the cousin is on the paternal or maternal side, whether they come through a brother or a sister of the parent, and whether they are older or younger than you. 堂兄 (táng xiōng) is a paternal-uncle's son older than you; 表妹 (biǎo mèi) is a maternal-side cousin younger than you who is female. This specificity is not pedantry — it encodes actual social obligations. Your relationship with paternal cousins (堂 táng) is traditionally closer and carries more formal weight than your relationship with maternal cousins (表 biǎo), because the 堂 cousins share your family name and patrilineal clan.

Addressing strangers in Chinese requires choosing from a small set of socially coded terms, each of which communicates something about how the speaker perceives the social relationship. The choice can be fraught: using an inappropriate term for someone's age or apparent status can cause mild offense or mild amusement, depending on direction. The safest bet for most contexts is 师傅 (shīfu), which will be covered below. The worst outcome is using 小姐 (xiǎojiě) for a woman who is not young — or, in some contexts, at all, since the word has acquired associations with sex work in parts of China.
师傅 (shīfu) is the workhorse term for addressing service workers, tradespeople, taxi drivers, craftspeople, and anyone performing a skill-based service. The word literally means "master" and was traditionally used to address one's craft or trade teacher. Its extension to cover taxi drivers, plumbers, and restaurant cooks reflects a practical form of respect: you are acknowledging the person's skill and treating them as a professional rather than a servant. Saying 师傅, 请问… (shīfu, qǐng wèn, "master, excuse me…") to a passing taxi driver or market vendor is reliably appropriate across class and regional lines.
老师 (lǎoshī, "teacher") is used not only for actual teachers but as a respectful address for anyone in a position of cultural authority or expertise: doctors, professors, artists, journalists, editors, and senior professionals. Using 老师 for someone is a compliment — it signals that you recognize their expertise and treat them as someone from whom you might learn. 老师 is also increasingly used in creative industries as a general honorific for experienced practitioners, regardless of age. It is almost never offensive and often warmly received.
先生 (xiānsheng, "mister") and 女士 (nǚshì, "Ms./Madam") are the formal public address terms, used in written communication, official announcements, customer service contexts, and in speech when a more formal register is appropriate. 先生 in Taiwanese Mandarin is also commonly used by wives to refer to their husbands. 同志 (tóngzhì, "comrade"), once the standard neutral address of the Mao era, has virtually disappeared from everyday use except in official Communist Party contexts — and has been repurposed in contemporary usage to mean "gay person" in informal speech, a reclaiming that has made the word unreliable in its original function.
Two prefixes — 老 (lǎo, "old") and 小 (xiǎo, "small" or "young") — are attached to surnames to create informal terms of address that signal familiarity and relative social position. 老 + surname (老王 Lǎo Wáng, 老张 Lǎo Zhāng) is used for someone older than you, or for a peer or subordinate for whom you feel warmth and familiarity — the prefix communicates affection and respect without formality. It is common among colleagues, neighbors, and members of the same social circle who have known each other for some time. The word 老 here does not mean the person is elderly; it means they are established, familiar, a known quantity. Calling a forty-year-old colleague 老王 is a compliment, not a remark on their age.
小 + surname (小李 Xiǎo Lǐ, 小陈 Xiǎo Chén) is used for someone younger than you, or for a junior colleague or subordinate. The prefix communicates affection, slight condescension in the best sense — the warmth of seniority — and informality. A boss who calls a young employee 小李 is expressing that the employee is known, accepted, and part of the group. The employee addresses the boss as 老王, not 小王. The asymmetry is understood by both parties without explanation.
The 老/小 system is one of the most immediately useful tools for navigating Chinese social environments. It works across professional and personal contexts, is broadly safe to use once a relationship is established, and communicates a level of social integration that foreigners rarely achieve quickly. Being addressed as 老 + your surname by a Chinese colleague is a small but genuine mark of acceptance. Note: neither prefix is ever used with one's own surname in self-reference — you do not refer to yourself as 老王. The form is always directed outward.
In professional contexts, the standard address form is surname + title: 王老师 (Wáng Lǎoshī, "Teacher Wang"), 李经理 (Lǐ Jīnglǐ, "Manager Li"), 张总 (Zhāng Zǒng, "Director Zhang" — 总 being short for 总经理, CEO/general manager). This form is used in contexts where the professional relationship is primary and where the title carries social weight. 张总 is a particularly common and versatile form in business: it can apply to any senior executive and signals that you recognize their seniority. Using it slightly above someone's actual rank is flattering rather than inaccurate — the social function of the address matters more than its technical precision.
First names are rarely used in professional Chinese contexts between people who are not close. Using someone's given name directly — as Western professional culture often does immediately upon introduction — signals either great intimacy or a misreading of the social register. Chinese colleagues who interact extensively with Westerners may offer an English name specifically so that the intimacy of first-name address can be extended to foreign contacts without the social awkwardness of using the Chinese given name. The English name is a deliberate social interface, not a rejection of Chinese identity.
The broader principle behind all Chinese address is that the form of address chosen performs the relationship rather than merely describing it. When you call someone 老师, you are not only identifying what they do — you are placing yourself in the role of student, acknowledging their authority in a domain, and expressing deference. When you call someone 小李, you are claiming relative seniority. Every address term carries a social vector, and choosing correctly demonstrates that you understand the relational topology of the situation you are in.
Master — the reliable general-purpose address for service workers and skilled tradespeople. Also the formal term for a craft or trade teacher. The safest default when addressing an unfamiliar adult male in a service or public context. Women in service roles are more commonly addressed as 阿姨 (āyí, "auntie") — informal but warmly received.
Form of address, title, mode of address — the technical term for the entire system of address terms. 亲属称谓 (qīnshǔ chēngwèi) refers specifically to kinship terms. Understanding 称谓 is considered a basic social competency. Its complexity is sometimes cited as evidence of the depth of Chinese attention to social hierarchy and relational precision.
Director/CEO Zhang — the surname + 总 form is among the most useful professional address terms. 总 is short for 总经理 (general manager) or 总裁 (president/CEO). It can safely be used for any senior executive and errs on the side of flattery. Variants: 总监 zǒngjiān (director), 副总 fùzǒng (deputy director).
Auntie — used to address unfamiliar middle-aged women in informal contexts: cleaning staff, market vendors, neighbors. More personal than 女士 and warmer than nothing. Children are taught to address all adult women as 阿姨, which is why adult women sometimes bristle at it — it implies they are visibly middle-aged. Addressing a young woman as 阿姨 is a social error.
The two categories of cousin in Chinese kinship. 堂 (táng) cousins share your family name and paternal line — children of your father's brothers. 表 (biǎo) cousins are on the maternal side or through the paternal sisters. The distinction encodes traditional Confucian clan logic: 堂 cousins are kin of the same surname; 表 cousins are related but belong to another family.

Applied to forms of address: using the wrong term for a relative or a colleague is not merely awkward; in the Confucian framework, it represents a failure to perceive the relationship correctly.
