字源zìyuánEtymology & Structure
字源洞见 zìyuán dòngjiàn · Etymological Insight
民 mín is a pictograph and serves as its own radical: it does not decompose into a meaning-part plus a sound-part the way most characters do. The simplified and traditional forms are identical, five strokes that have stayed remarkably stable across the script's history. In the standard dictionary system 民 heads its own small radical group, so a learner meets it not as a component assembled from others but as a primitive sign in its own right.
The early graph is sobering. On bronze and seal forms 民 is usually read as a figure pierced or marked at the eye, an image many paleographers connect to the branding or blinding of captives reduced to servitude. From that harsh origin the word generalised: from the subjugated, to the governed, to the ordinary mass of people set below the ruler, and finally to the people as such. The trajectory matters, because the political weight of 民 in later Chinese thought, the idea that a ruler holds power only so long as the people consent, sits on top of a word that once meant the lowliest of subjects.
Three semantic lives grow out of this core of the governed mass: 民 as the populace and the people (人民, 民众); 民 as the individual member of a polity, the citizen or resident (公民, 居民, 农民); and 民 as folk and nation, the people considered as a culture and a stock (民族, 民间, 民俗). A fourth, narrower sense pairs 民 against the military: 民用 civilian-use, 民航 civil aviation. And in modern coinage the word anchors two great political abstractions, 民主 mínzhǔ (democracy, the people as master) and 民生 mínshēng (the people's livelihood).

人民rénmínThe People & the Populace
人民rénmínthe people (the political collective)
N 名词 míngcí
人 rén (person) + 民. The people understood as a single political subject, not merely a head-count of individuals. The term carries strong institutional weight in modern China, saturating the names of state organs and the language of governance. It points to the people as the source and beneficiary of legitimate power.
The renminbi is China's official currency. (lit. the people's currency)
文化 wénhuà · Key Compounds
人民日报 Rénmín Rìbào (People's Daily) · 人民币 Rénmínbì (the currency, lit. the people's currency) · 人民法院 rénmín fǎyuàn (People's Court) · 人民大会堂 Rénmín Dàhuìtáng (the Great Hall of the People). The word threads through official and civic discourse in a way no neutral synonym does.
民众mínzhòngthe masses; the general public
N 名词 míngcí
民 + 众 zhòng (multitude, crowd). The ordinary public viewed as a large body, common in news writing and formal description: how the public reacts, what the public expects. More descriptive and less ideologically charged than 人民, and broader and more neutral than the warmer, address-style 大家.
这项政策受到广大民众的支持。
Zhè xiàng zhèngcè shòudào guǎngdà mínzhòng de zhīchí.
This policy enjoys the support of the broad public.

平民píngmíncommoner; an ordinary person (vs the elite)
N 名词 míngcí
平 píng (level, ordinary, common) + 民. An ordinary person without rank, wealth, or official position: the commoner as opposed to nobles, officials, or celebrities. 平民百姓 píngmín bǎixìng is a fixed pairing meaning the common folk, the man and woman in the street.
He came from a common background and changed his fortunes through hard work.
战争中受苦最多的是平民。
Zhànzhēng zhōng shòukǔ zuì duō de shì píngmín.
It is civilians who suffer the most in war.
辨析 biànxī · 平民 vs. 公民平民 píngmín contrasts a person with the elite: ordinary, untitled, without privilege. 公民 gōngmín is a legal status: a member of a state with rights and duties. A king's subject can be a 平民 without being a 公民 in the modern legal sense; a wealthy executive is a 公民 but no longer a 平民. The first axis is social rank, the second is legal membership.
公民gōngmínCitizens & Residents: The Member
公民gōngmíncitizen (a legal member of a state)
N 名词 míngcí
公 gōng (public, common) + 民. The legal-political term for a citizen: a person who holds the nationality of a state and bears its rights and obligations. The standard word in constitutional and legal contexts, paired with 权利 quánlì (rights) and 义务 yìwù (duties).
每个公民都有受教育的权利。
Měi gè gōngmín dōu yǒu shòu jiàoyù de quánlì.
Every citizen has the right to an education.

辨析 biànxī · 人民 vs. 公民人民 rénmín is the people as a collective political subject, a mass with a shared will; you cannot count it or hold a single 人民. 公民 gōngmín is the individual legal member, countable and rights-bearing: one citizen, every citizen. The collective and the member are two faces of 民, the political body and its legal atom.
居民jūmínresident; inhabitant (of a place)
N 名词 míngcí
居 jū (to dwell, to reside) + 民. A person defined by where they live rather than by their nationality: the residents of a building, a neighbourhood, a city, a region. The everyday administrative word, as in 居民区 jūmínqū (a residential district) and 城市居民 (urban residents).
小区居民对噪音很有意见。
Xiǎoqū jūmín duì zàoyīn hěn yǒu yìjiàn.
The residents of the complex have many complaints about the noise.
这座城市的居民超过一千万。
Zhè zuò chéngshì de jūmín chāoguò yīqiān wàn.
This city has more than ten million inhabitants.
农民nóngmínfarmer; peasant (a person of the land)
N 名词 míngcí
农 nóng (agriculture, farming) + 民. A person whose livelihood is the land. The word covers both the neutral modern sense farmer and, in historical and social contexts, the peasantry as a class. For most of Chinese history the 农民 were the overwhelming majority of the population and the bedrock of the agrarian economy.
农民在田里辛勤劳作。
Nóngmín zài tián lǐ xīnqín láozuò.
The farmers toil diligently in the fields.
很多农民进城打工。
Hěn duō nóngmín jìn chéng dǎgōng.
Many farmers go to the cities to find work.
构词 gòucí · The X + 民 role pattern
A field or place set before 民 names a person by role or status: 农民 farmer, 渔民 yúmín (fisherman), 牧民 mùmín (herder), 网民 wǎngmín (netizen), 移民 yímín (immigrant, emigrant), 难民 nànmín (refugee). The pattern is highly productive: once you know 民 names a member of a group, each new compound reads itself.
民族mínzúFolk & Nation: Among the People
民族mínzúethnic group; nationality; a people
N 名词 míngcí
民 + 族 zú (clan, lineage, group). A people considered as a cultural and ethnic stock: an ethnic group, a nationality, a nation in the cultural sense. China officially recognises 56 民族, the 汉族 Hànzú (Han) and 55 少数民族 shǎoshù mínzú (ethnic minorities). The word also carries the larger sense of a whole nation's identity, as in 中华民族.
Every ethnic group has its own language and culture.
民间mínjiānamong the people; folk; non-governmental
Adj 形容词 xíngróngcí
民 + 间 jiān (among, within). The realm of ordinary life as opposed to the official, the courtly, or the state: that which exists among the people. As a modifier it marks something as folk or grassroots: 民间故事 a folk tale, 民间艺术 folk art, 民间组织 a non-governmental organisation, 民间借贷 informal private lending.
Many traditional crafts are preserved among the common people.
辨析 biànxī · 民间 vs. 官方民间 mínjiān (among the people, folk, unofficial) stands opposite 官方 guānfāng (official, governmental). A 民间传说 is a folk legend passed mouth to mouth; an 官方声明 is an official statement. The pair maps the whole divide between grassroots life and the apparatus of the state.
民歌míngēfolk song
N 名词 míngcí
民 + 歌 gē (song). A song that arises and circulates among the people rather than being composed for the concert hall: the traditional songs of a region or an ethnic group, often anonymous and passed down orally. A close cousin is 民俗 mínsú, folk custom, the broader fabric of popular tradition that such songs belong to.
这首陕北民歌非常动听。

成语chéngyǔIdioms & Set Phrases
国泰民安guó tài mín ānthe country prosperous and the people at peace: an era of stability and good orderLiterally "the state secure, the people at peace." A classic blessing for an age of good governance: when the country is stable and well-run, the people live in peace and security. A staple of New Year couplets and official well-wishing, it pairs the fate of the state with the welfare of the people as two halves of one ideal.
民以食为天mín yǐ shí wéi tiānto the people, food is heaven: nothing matters more than feeding the peopleLiterally "the people take food as heaven." An ancient maxim of statecraft: the first and highest concern of any ruler is that the people have enough to eat. Still quoted constantly in everyday life, often half-jokingly, to defend the seriousness of a good meal. It makes feeding the people the foundation of all governance.
民不聊生mín bù liáo shēngthe people can scarcely survive: a populace plunged into miseryLiterally "the people have no means to make a living." A grim phrase for times of misrule, war, or disaster when ordinary people cannot even keep themselves alive. 聊 liáo here is the classical sense "to rely on, to depend on for," so 不聊生 means having nothing to depend on for life. The dark mirror of 国泰民安.

Hold 民 mín as the people set below the ruler, the broad mass on whom every state finally rests. The graph's dark beginning, a captive marked at the eye, became over the centuries the most weighted political word in the language: not a number, but a subject with a will. Whoever holds power holds it on loan from the 民.
From that one idea the whole vocabulary unfolds. The collective is 人民 the people and 民众 the masses; the individual member is the 公民 citizen, the 居民 resident, the 农民 farmer; the people as a culture and a stock is the 民族 nation, living in the 民间 folk realm and singing its 民歌. And the great modern coinages keep the same root: 民主, the people as master, and 民生, the people's livelihood. Remember the proverbs and the politics follow: 国泰民安 when the state is sound the people are at peace, and 民以食为天, that to the people, food itself is heaven.
