汉服 hànfú — literally "Han clothing" — refers to the traditional dress system of the Han Chinese ethnic majority as it developed from the Zhou dynasty through the end of the Ming dynasty. The term is specific: it does not mean all historical Chinese clothing (which includes Mongolian, Manchu, Tibetan, and dozens of other traditions), nor does it mean the cheongsam 旗袍 qípáo or the Mandarin jacket 唐装 tángzhuāng, both of which derive from Qing dynasty Manchu dress. It refers to a particular family of garment forms characterized by a set of structural principles that remained consistent across two thousand years of variation.

The defining structural feature of hànfú is the 交领右衽 jiāolǐng yòurèn — the cross-collar wrapping right-over-left. The right side of the collar crosses over to the left, creating a diagonal neckline. This is the opposite of the Korean hanbok's and Japanese kimono's standard construction; it is also the opposite of the left-over-right wrapping that in Chinese tradition was reserved for the shrouding of the dead. This asymmetric wrap is both a functional and a symbolic feature — so fundamental that its presence or absence is one of the primary tests for whether a garment counts as hànfú.

The second defining feature is 宽袍大袖 kuānpáo dàxiù — wide robes and broad sleeves. Hànfú garments are characteristically loose and flowing, with sleeves that can be very wide (especially in formal court dress), allowing movement without constraint. The visual silhouette is one of fabric in motion — pleated skirts 裙 qún that swing, sleeves that trail. This aesthetic of generous fabric is part of the clothing's ceremonial character: it signals that the wearer need not perform physical labor.

The garment system can be divided into three structural categories. The first is 上下制 (shàngxià zhì) — upper and lower garments worn separately, the basic structure of everyday wear from Zhou times onward. The second is 深衣制 (shēnyī zhì) — the "deep robe" in which upper and lower parts are cut separately but sewn together as one continuous garment, associated with scholars and ritual occasions. The third is 通裁制 (tōngcái zhì) — a one-piece cut garment, less common but present in certain court and religious contexts. Within these three structural types, literally hundreds of specific garment forms developed across dynasties, each with its own name, occasion of use, and social significance.

The event that severed the living tradition of hànfú was the Qing dynasty's 剃发易服 tì fà yì fú policy — literally "cut the hair, change the dress." When the Manchu Qing forces swept into China in 1644 after the fall of the Ming, the new Shunzhi Emperor issued a decree requiring all Han Chinese men to adopt Manchu hairstyle and dress under pain of death: the head to be shaved except for a single braided queue 辫子 biànzi, and clothing to be changed to the Manchu-style tight-collared, narrow-sleeved garments. The decree applied to men in official life immediately; broader enforcement followed. The slogan attached to the enforcement was stark: 留头不留发,留发不留头 — "Keep your head and lose your hair, or keep your hair and lose your head."

The policy met with fierce resistance. Several cities were massacred for refusing — the 扬州十日 Yángzhōu Shí Rì (Ten Days of Yangzhou, 1645) and the 嘉定三屠 Jiādìng Sān Tú (Three Massacres of Jiading) became symbols of Han martyrdom in later nationalist historiography. Over time the resistance collapsed, and within two or three generations the Manchu queue and Manchu dress had become simply "Chinese" in the eyes of most inhabitants of the empire.

One important exemption existed: women's dress. The Qing did not require Han women to adopt Manchu female dress, only men's dress and hair. Han women continued to wear forms of traditional Han women's clothing, which is why the vocabulary of women's hànfú is more continuous across the Qing period. The court 旗袍 qípáo originated as Manchu women's dress but evolved through the 1920s-1930s into the form-fitting silk dress we know today — a hybrid that belongs to neither tradition unchanged.

The Qing rupture meant that by the time the dynasty fell in 1912, approximately 268 years had passed without a living tradition of Han men's traditional dress. The knowledge of how to cut, assemble, and wear hànfú had become textual and pictorial rather than embodied — preserved in paintings, court inventories, and dramatic costumes, but no longer worn as everyday dress. This is the gap the modern revival movement has had to work across.

The modern 汉服运动 hànfú yùndòng (Hanfu Movement) is generally dated to November 22, 2003, when a 25-year-old electrical engineer named 王乐天 Wáng Lètiān walked through the streets of Zhengzhou, Henan province, dressed in a reconstructed Ming-dynasty robe. A journalist photographed him; the images circulated online and generated enormous response. Within months, online communities dedicated to researching and reviving hànfú were forming across Chinese internet platforms. The movement was born in the early internet era and has remained deeply online in its organizational structure — communities on Baidu forums, later on Weibo and WeChat, coordinating research, pattern-making, and public wearing events.

The revival presents a genuine scholarly challenge. Much historical hànfú knowledge was not systematically preserved; advocates must work from paintings, tomb figurines, literary descriptions, and surviving garments in museum collections (many of which are in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, where elements of Tang and Song dress were preserved in religious and court traditions). The community has developed a rich internal vocabulary for distinguishing garment forms, evaluating historical accuracy, and classifying commercial products — distinguishing 形制正确 xíngzhì zhèngquè (structurally correct) from 汉元素 hàn yuánsù (merely "Han-inspired" in aesthetic without structural accuracy).

The movement's demographics are primarily young, urban, and female — studies of hànfú communities consistently find that women constitute the large majority of practitioners, and that the peak age range is late teens to late twenties. The appeal is partly aesthetic (the clothing is genuinely striking), partly cultural nationalist, and partly a form of romantic historicism: inhabiting a visual world that feels more richly Chinese than contemporary fashion. The wearing of hànfú has become a common sight at cultural heritage sites, university campuses, and traditional festivals. Major commercial producers have made the garments widely available at price points from a few hundred to several thousand yuan; the hànfú market has been estimated at over ten billion yuan annually.

The movement also carries political and ethnic dimensions that are openly discussed within it. Defining hànfú by its Han Chinese ethnic specificity necessarily raises questions about ethnic identity in a country with fifty-six recognized ethnic groups and an official ideology of multi-ethnic harmony. The exclusion of the cheongsam and Mandarin jacket — widely understood abroad as "Chinese" dress — on the grounds that they derive from Manchu tradition is a contestation of what "Chinese" means. Scholars and commentators have noted that the movement participates in a broader re-evaluation of ethnic Han identity in the post-Mao era, when the framework of revolutionary class identity has faded and other forms of collective identification have expanded to fill the space.
